Aside from some old Russian lenses and a Nikkor 70-300 I am starting
from scratch. I am not sure weather it is better to to spend the money
on glass or a nice low light sensor. The AF 70-300 1:4-5.6 G is a
cheapy, but has been great at the theater, shooting close ups of
flowers, and inconspicuously catching faces in a crowd — if there is
enough light.
The 18-200 DX sounds convenient, but I have heard the mids are a
little mushy and I am worried that in Churches and reception halls
there may not be enough light.

Before the Canon-ites start the usual wailing,
I'd suggest a D90, period. Plenty there to play with, at a good price.
Spend the rest of the moolah on some good, fast glass. Not necessarily Nikon,
Sigma has some good value propositions.
And that's about it.
