Er, but it's circa 8 1/3 years out of date.

I have had several rabbis comment that we are heading towards being a
third world country. Since 1910 each generation has been a bit worst
than the previous generation. We seem to have become too comfortable,
too wealthy, as people (total US population that is). But this may be
the natural cycle of things.

On closer examination I think you'll find several thousand distinct
differences. Some of those may be improvements, and some probably
aren't; but "basically Bush III? Hardly.

(Unless, of course, you're comparing them both to either Christ or
Satan; in which case your need for intensive therapy outweighs any
other factor in the equation.)

It is a major problem in the USA.

Trouble is it started with those puritans from England way back. If the
real Americans had managed or even tried to keep them out, the problem would
not have continued to multiply the way it has.

Perhaps you should start by getting rid of all the white settlers first,
since they started the problem.

I think to some considerable extent yes, it is in the natural cycle of
things.

Someone said long ago that all democracies eventually destroy themselves.

As for the U.S., I'm afraid we have seen our best days. We don't seem to
have the moral fiber or political vitality to resist cultural deterioration;
indeed we seem to welcome it in any form. Patriotism appears to be in steady
decline. We have a president who goes abroad, spends most of his time
apologizing for the U.S., glad-handing communist dictators and sitting mute
while they revile the U.S. in hour-long speeches, offers no defense of the
country in return, in fact adds his own criticisms of it -- and still has
high approval ratings here according to most polls. We have, evidently, the
first anti-American American president, and many foreigners fall over
themselves with admiration of him for being that -- as they tend to admire
any American who disparages his own country.

We have effectively stopped defending our own borders, and there seems to be
more outrage directed at private citizens who try to help defend our
southern border than there is against the millions who violate that border,
often with criminal intent.

Meanwhile the entire West seems to be in decline. World population continues
to grow, but not among western Europeans -- I read recently that no country
in Europe now has a birth rate sufficient to maintain its population, except
for Muslim Albania. Pat Buchanan has addressed this issue repeatedly in his
recent books. So we in the U.S. may be only part of a much wider problem.

The "ones who were already here" killed (or absorbed) the ones who were here
before them, and so on back for the last 12,000 years or so. It's the way it
works, bunky. Read a little ancient history and you'll get the idea.

Again: "racist bigots" appears to be nothing more than the term doctrinaire,
politically correct tunnel-vision types use to disparage anyone who doesn't
share their own narrow belief system and prejudices. Perhaps they believe
calling people "racist bigots" is a form of logical argument. One wonders
why.

So you think anyone who believes our borders should actually mean something
suffers from "rampant xenophobia." Understood, but since most Americans
(especially those who live on or near our daily-violated borders) believe
exactly that, as do most nationals of any other country, your opinion counts
for approximately nothing.

In fact without immigrants over the last 500 years where would the USA

Which high tech industries are those?

And meanwhile a bunch of American engineering graduates are waiting tables
or teaching school or working at Best Buy because Boeing didn't hire them.

For some reason people have the notion that foreigners get hired for
technical positions and that enrollments are declining in technical programs
because there is a shortfall of qualified American applicants. Foreigners
get hired because for an experienced foreigner US entry level is often a
significant pay increase, and Americans don't enroll in engineering programs
because there aren't any jobs waiting for them.

Or not, as the case may be. You have no way of knowing that.

At the very least put a tax on new hires who are not US citizens equal to
the pay differential between wherever they came from and the US, with NO
exceptions. If the guy is some kind of super specialist of whom there are
three in the world then the employer shouldn't have any problem with paying
whatever it costs to get him, but it will end the practice of hiring some
guy from India to do a job that some guy from Peoria could do as well.

I think that if you check you will find that while a few top-level
physicists were foreigners the rank and file who actually did all the grunt
work to make it happen were Americans.

As for the space program, they gave us a leg up but only because Goddard got
the same treatment that most other American technical visionaries
get--everybody laughed at him. And those Germans are long-since dead or
retired.

That makes no sense whatever. If the guy can do the job, and can come here
as a legal immigrant, he deserves to get paid what he's worth -- and without
any extra punitive taxation piled on.

I don't see any problem with LEGAL immigrants. They've been the people who
to a large extent over the last couple of centuries built the country into
what it is now. Many of them started businesses, made fortunes and became
big employers in their own right. All that has been good for us.

ILLEGAL immigrants are another story entirely, of course.

maneuvered into war by the evil Neville Chamberlain, having read that far I
