What kind of caterpillar is this (and will it turn into a butterfly or a moth)?

Hi all,

Does anyone know what kind of caterpillar this is?

(Unlike my fish a while back, there's enough information to tell this
time.)

Thanks!

Kind of looks like a gypsy moth caterpillar. Look for a nearby tent.

Sigh. So it does. The beautiful little crawler turns out to be quite
destructive....

And evil!

Whatever you do, don't touch one of those little beasties.

Those bastards will leave a mean rash on you, or even cause a systemic
reaction. Sadly, I speak from experience. Oh god it is nasty. Never
touch any caterpillar or allow it to brush against you.

On closer inspection of some pictures, it looks like it might be an
Eastern Tent Caterpillar. Either way, it's a tree eater. (I was
really hoping for a pre-Monarch butterfly.)

Tent caterpillar or gypsy moth caterpillar, very destructive species,
loves young oak trees, we have them on ornamental plums. Develops into
a drab gray moth. Don't know about reactions to the beast, I have
pulled them off uninfected trees by hand.
