ive been trying to figure out what version of adobe acr i need to
download and upgrade to with cs3 extended to open up raw files from
the 5d mark II .

after checking the upgrades available on the adobe page im not sure if
cs3 can open them the latest version camera raw 5.2 will only work
with versions cs4 and up ?

cs3 is to use the dng converter and open up the dng file.

If you have a 5D2, you have a CD with Digital Photo Professional. With the
latest updates, DPP will convert your RAW files and feed the converted images
directly to Photoshop.
