Anything I can try which might restore them?
thanks
Whatever you do, don't write or save anything more to the card until you
have a chance to restore. I had a problem awhile back with a CF card and
tried several programs to recover the files. The one that worked best for me
was Zero Assumption Digital Image Recovery. It's free to use to recover
image files http://www.z-a-recovery.com/digital-image-recovery.htm I tried
others including PC Inspector, Drive Rescue, and eImage Recovery but none of
them recovered as many pics. Bear in mind that the success in recovery
depends on the situation and there are unfortunately, no guarantees. BTW, I
used a card reader when running the software. Good Luck.
Thanks for the reply, a couple of questions though.
1. If it works will it recover video clips?
2. Not sure I understand the `card reader` part, I download from my camera
to a folder on my PC (via canon programme), will it work on that basis or do
I need to get a `card reader`?
thanks

The free version of ZA Image Recovery supposedly will recover mov files.
Presumably, their more comprehensive program would recover other types of
files and they have a trial version. You could also try Drive Rescue (free)
or one of the others I mentioned.

I think it should work without a card reader. I just mentioned that because
that was how I had it set up. You can try it and see. I suspect it has to
appear to the program that your camera is a removable drive. If you have to
get a reader, they're quite cheap on eBay or since you're in the UK, at a
place like http://tinyurl.com/zr683

Since you mention a Canon camera, I have to ask: is the memory card an
older Lexar card? Lexar had a compatibility problem with Canon (or vice
versa depending on your point of view) a year or two back.
I got the card from `discount shop` its a Viking interworks 512 MB which up
until now has worked ok.>

Thanks Dave, I did try and it was mostly gobildy gook that I retrieved and
it was 33GB from a 512 MB card, it took 6 hours.
I will borrow a card reader and try again.
thanks
OK I managed to retrieve some more of my pics using
http://www.z-a-recovery.com/digital-image-recovery.htm
A couple of more questions.....
1. There are still a few that are missing do I try a re run or will that be
final now in terms of recovery.
2. I have not managed to retrieve any of the video clips is there a way to
do this?

This is something that you didn't ask, but I think is valuable
information. After you recover the images on the card (for example,
by using the recommendations in the previous replies), if you are
still unable to make the card suitable for future use, Viking Customer
Support told me that they guarantee their cards to work properly (for
a specific period of time since manufacture) and will even replace one
that became corrupted.
I just sent them a Viking SmartMedia card that I wasn't able to
uncorrupt enough for any of my Olympus cameras to recognize or format.
Bruce
Probably that's it with that particular program.

Try PC Inspector http://www.pcinspector.de/file_recovery/uk/welcome.htm or
try the shareware version of ZA Recovery (if you haven't already.) When I
had a problem, I was able to recover all or part of the images that had been
lost. The ones where I recovered part of the image were not that valuable to
me fortunately. You could also do a search for downloads at CNET.com or
twocows using the search terms "file recovery." I tried several programs and
did find that some recovered more than others. But the ZA program got the
most.
