When using PhotoShop 5.5 and looking at the jpeg pics I have take
with the Nikon CP950 they show up as 72 pixels per inch and the tiff files
show up as 300 pixels per inch. How ever when I view jpeg pics that I have
taken with other viewing programs such as the Microsoft photo editor they
show up as 300 pixels per inch as well as in the Kodak imaging software.
The question I have is why is PhotoShop reading the image information
wrong when pulling up jpegs images that I have taken with that camera at
300 pixels per inch? Anyone else that are using the camera & photoshop 5.5
seeing this? How do I fix this?

More importantly, why does it matter?

Whenever Photoshop imports what it considers to be a "foreign" format (and
the CP950 JPEG it so considers), it always gives it a 72 dpi resolution.
However, it will make the image size huge. Look in the image size menu in
PS with one on the screen. I bet you'll find the picture is sized at
fifteen or twenty inches wide, or thereabouts. Unclick the "resample"
button and change the resolution to 300. The image size will shrink down
to about the same size as your TIFF files, and what you end up with is
pretty much the same thing as the TIFF. I do this every day, and it's no
more than a couple of mouse clicks worth of irritation.
