I'd like to give this a bash, but, surely the apature would have to be open
for quite some time because of the dark? But if this is so, surely the
ripples would be blurred? Also, to have the darkening in the corners... does
that indicate a certain filter, or would this be done with Photoshop or
something? Surely Photoshop is required for this photo?
In my opinion, this is simply a back-lit AND severely underexposed shot (at
least compared to what the scene really would have looked to the eye).
I believe the actual scene was quite a bit brighter than it appears here.
The sun isn't actually below the horizon yet...rather it's behind the high
part of the building. This would mean the general scene was still fairly
bright compared to how it was captured. Note that there are blue sections
of the sky that look properly exposed for daylight.
This would mean that it could still have been shot at a fairly high shutter
speed, which gave a blue sky, severely underexposed foreground, and dark
reflections of the underexposed clouds.

You mean on the water?
I don't think there's any tricky photoshopping going on there.
That's what you'd expect from a sky that color on under-exposed water.
The key there is the fact that the water's color isn't coming through at all
in this exposure...only the reflected golden sunset colors.
However, up in Scotland today, there ain't too much chance of sun! Plenty of
water though.. :)

Great!
-But don't expect to see "gold" unless you've got it in the sky...
:)
It's a great shot, and would not be easy for anyone to capture without some
experimentation.
...Not to mention that you've got to find a beautiful sunset...with water
between you and the sun-obstructing subject.

It's exposed for the bright part of the sky; the shutter speed could be
quite fast, probably even fast enough to hand-hold the camera. Sunset
skies are still quite bright, so if you want the foreground to go black
(clearly the intent in this shot) there isn't much trickery to it.

OK, so, I tried to bring out whatever was there in the shadow areas of
the image - we're getting into the noise floor here, but there is more
data in there. You may find it amusing.

Not at all. Sounds like the sort of person who can't feel himself
without knocking down someone else.
It's simply a shot just before sunset. Nothing remarkable whatsoever.
The light would not be that low, and an exposure of about 1/200 sec is
quite likely.

Quite right, it is a nice shot. And also it's a fairly easy shot that
can be taken with almost any camera around. I was just checking out some
of the first digital pictures (well any pictures) I've ever taken and
managed to find a shot that's got a _bit_ of similar touch to it. It was
taken about 2 years ago with a Canon Digital Ixus 330 point & shoot.
http://toolbox.homeunix.net/~juha/102-0238_IMG.JPG
The picture is unaltered 2 megapixel shot (~700KB).
I'm not saying it's as good or has the same ammount of effect in it, but
the sun setting down shares a bit of the same.

Hey Tony,
I think you'd appreciate this little keyboard gizmo I got recently.
-It lets you program keyboard shortcuts (or anything else up to 256 actions)
into any one of it's 20 keys. I've got one button that I push which adds
folks to kill-files...all with one press.
Me-thinks you could benefit...
:)
It's great for other rutine tasks too...like rotations, photoshop stuff, or
anything else you can dream up. It's not cheap, but if you're interested,
it's called "X-Keys" and comes in several different configurations.
Here's the link:

Think of this as my attempt to relieve those blisters you must surely have
on your PLONKING finger. :) Just think... You could avoid carpel tunnel
syndrome due to easier kill-filing!

They've got a nifty "strip" version (a single line of buttons) that fits
nicely above the F-keys on many keyboards if you don't need 20 keys. It's
nice, too, because the strip one has back-lit buttons. My 20-key version
can be configured to actually have 38 effective buttons by assigning one of
the twenty as a "shift" key of sorts. When you push the "shift" key (it can
be any of the 20), a light comes on to let you know that the key-pad is not
in shift mode. This is nice because it means you could have one full key
set for, say, Photoshop, and the other non-shifted set for all other stuff.
Whatever you want, though.

No. This is because it is designed to basically "type" specific keystrokes
for you. It does this extremely quickly, though you can put pauses between
strokes if, for some reason, your program needs a pause before the next
command is given.

I've got lots of un-used ones.
BTW--Each botton has a see-through "lid" under which you can put your own

Please excuse my Internet ignorance, but are you saying that you are
the photographer of these incredible images? I think that is what you
are saying, but I'm not sure. And the unbelievable one of the backlit
castle with sunset? These are so good, I find myself dumbfounded by
them. Also are you saying the image of the pond / lake with the fuzzy
green trees http://www.pbase.com/image/32181860 is part of what was
photoshopped into the final castle photo? What a talent! Your gallery
is going into "My Favorites" John
