You're right, it's Feininger ... title was "Photojournalist" and the copy I
have says it was taken in 1955. Haven't seen it on the web but have seen it
reproduced several times in various books.

Actually, just did a quick Google search on "Andreas Feininger Photojournalist"
and saw it was a self-portrait. One could probably poke around a bit and find
the image on the web ... here's what one site had to say about the photo ...

"His best-known picture is probably his self-portrait 'The Photojournalist', an
anonymous (and even androgynous or perhaps android) figure with Leica in front
of face; one eye the lens, the other the accessory viewfinder."

Here's a site that has the photo you described (link is so long you'll have to
cut/paste to get it all into your browser, most likely). ...

It is not a self portrait, but a shot of another Life Photographer - name
forgotten. Feininger was a large format specialist, rarely using 35mm.

The photographer is Man Ray. Do a search for other images by
him. Very very creative and challenging images, even in
light of all that we can do with computers these days.

Man Ray did not take the photograph in question, nor was he in the
photograph in question. I've seen many Man Ray pictures, and even own a few
books of his work. I've seen nothing like it from him, although he may very
well have done something similar.
The famous shot is by Feininger, was in Life magazine, and is on the
cover of one of Feininger's books, as well as being in every general
collection of his pictures.
