Been following with interest recent discussions about the near-photo
quality of the newest generation of inkjet printers from Epson and HP.

My question: How do the images look when printed on conventional
laserwriter quality paper rather than the specially coated papers? My
guess is that since these new printers put down a lot more ink,
bleed-through and wrinkling would be particularly troublesome.

Which printer(s) (inkjet or otherwise) put the best quality photos on to
plain paper?

I do not know if there is another setting for this situation on the

Gene, I have an older Epson. The driver has setting for all types of
paper - when you select regular paper, it obviously doesn't put out
anywhere near as much ink. Works fine, although of course the picture
quality is not as good as with specialty papers.

I Think it depends on what you really want to do with your pictures....
when i print the ones i take i normally put them on the web... but when i
print them to go into a book of flyers or something i use the ink jet /
high quality paper. and when i did that i have had several people lift the
plastic and try to feel the picture... they don't realize it is part of the
paper not a photgraph... so i tend to believe it is worth the investment
but then again i spent like ten bucks and got a hundred sheets and have
like 80 left.

(my printing is done with a cannon 4200 and also do black and white on a hp
4mplus
)

The PhotoSmart printer has a plain-paper setting that adjusts the ink
for those conditions. The results are quite good (for plain paper).
I don't know how it compares with others.

There is a setting for plain paper and one for inkjet paper as well as
all the others for photo papers. Output is quite good on both of these
with very little saturation.

I've seen stupendous output from an Iris smartjet onto non-coated papers
(specifically, high-quality papers used for watercolor painting). I don't
think you were asking about the high-end stuff, but I wonder what it is
abo the smartjet that makes it so good at printing onto relatively porous
surfaces...

The output om 8x10 CompUSA inkjet paper was quite acceptable for draft
purposes on my PS printer, even though I was printing images from my DC-120
(1280x960 res). Surprisingly, the output was also pretty good on an old
DeskJet transparency. Good thing, too as it was needed for a presentation
on Wednesday.
