The very first time I went to Manhattan I had a reservation at the
Mayflower Hotel. I shared a cab from the airport with someone who was
staying in some other hotel on 59th Street. It was late in the
afternoon, so I got out of the cab at his hotel intending to walk to
the Mayflower and do a little sight-seeing. My ride told me to go up
6th Avenue and turn left at Central Park South and the Mayflower would
be in sight.
I wandered around, gawking like a tourist, and eventually decided to
go on to hotel. I looked up at a street sign and it said "Avenue of
the Americas", so I walked over a block to 5th Avenue. And then back.
There was no 6th Avenue.
I stopped some local (who acted like he was afraid I'd spray ricin
over him) and asked which way was 6th Avenue. He snarled "You're
standing on it, you fucking idiot". Only later did I notice that the
street sign also had 6th Avenue in smaller letters at the bottom.
(The current street signs have 6th Avenue in larger letters)
The next morning I got on the elevator at the Mayflower and recognized
the other person in the elevator as an actor I knew from some show,
but couldn't think of what show or what character he played. I didn't
say anything, though.
He saw me looking at him and said something like "You know you've seen
me on some television program, doncha?" I said "Yes".
He said "You know who I am, then?". I said "No", expecting him to
tell me.
Then, just as he exited the elevator, he said "Well, you never fucking
will, then" and stalked away. I never did figure out who he was. Some
character actor.
I was beginning to think that all conversations in New York would
involve the word "fucking".
