So just quit whining, buy a 70-200mm f/2.8 VR/II and put a TC-14e-II

It's not worth it. Even the lowly 80-400mm without a T/C produces better
images than the 70-200's with converters. I've compared them at length.

2. Dislike the fact Nikon seems to dictate to them what they should want?
Talk to a few of them. For all its attributes, the biggest complaint
against Nikon is the glacial pace of product releases and no, I'm not
taking about entry-level DSLR bodies, I'm talking about decent lenses.

The problem is, talking to just a few doesn't give a very representative
view of what the whole customer base thinks/wants. I'd be interested to
see the data from YOUR market research that supports your claim -
except, of course, this is just more of your inane drivel and you have
no intrinsic data to back it up.

I think most Nikon users would prefer a cautious approach to new
releases rather than Canon's more hasty approach. Canon's quick-fire
introduction of new equipment is almost inevitably followed by the
need for careful recalibration and, in several cases, product recalls.
Give me something that works, out of the box, every time. Please.
My Nikon D700 and AF Nikkors have been faultless. However, my first
Canon EOS 5D needed the AF recalibrated once, the 24-105mm L lens
once, and the two recalibrated together before the AF became reliable.
The repair centre I used reckons that around 70% of Canon EOS bodies
they accept for repair have AF systems that would benefit from
recalibration, although the majority of Canon owners aren't aware of
the problem. They probably just blame their lenses for being unsharp!
My first 5D worked fine after final recalibration. My second only
needed doing once. Neither has never needed doing again. That
suggests that (1) the 5D is fairly robust, because my bodies get
plenty of rough handling but don't lose adjustment, and (2) the
problem is with the AF system as set-up at the factory.
Apparently the basic design of the Canon AF system means that small
calibration errors tend to lead to larger errors in focusing - this
was explained quite eloquently on here by David Kilpatrick some months
back and is well worth reading. The Nikon AF system is apparently
less sensitive to small errors in calibration.
Ironically, I now mostly use manual focus AIS lenses on the D700. It
is so like using a digital version of the F100. ;-)

Any user of any equipment from any company has gripes about it for a
number of reasons. I don't know of any pros who have been hurt by their
long term commitment to Nikon.

I've never had that problem. Most of the Nikon lenses I have bought
have always been decent. All you have to do is understand what you are
buying, and why.
