I have to give a speech tomorrow in which I shall touch the question
photography & art. For this I need names of well-known art museums
that exhibit photography. Doesn't for example the Museum of Modern Art
in NY have a photography section?

Eberhard:

The Met in NYC have extensive photo collections and lectures from time to time.
I attended an Ansel Adams lecture there years ago. Call them at 1.212.535.7710.

The Minneapolis Institute of Art has a very extensive photography collection,
some of which is on continuous display. In addition, they always have special
shows of select photographers. Currently, they are showing the work of Arnold
Newman. A while back, they had a combined show of work by Georgia O'Keeffe and
Alfred Stieglitz.

Last week, I attended a Edward Weston exhibit "Photography and
Modernism" exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. This was
primarily Weston's photos, but there were several other period artists
(painting, photo, a little sculpture) They also had a mock up of
Weston's darkroom. Very interesting to see how simple it was...

Last month, I saw TWO Walker Evans exhibits. One was at the Met in NYC
(this was a solo exhibit) and in the MOMA ( a few photographers
represented including Man Ray and Weston)

Hope this helps!

While a smaller museum gallery, ours in Brigham City, Utah has hosted "The
Great American West" show, with Tom Till, Ctein, Rodger Newbold, Tillman
Crane, Dan Smith, Val Brinkerhoff, Barry Parsons, David Stoecklein and
others. Opening 5 May is The Birds: Wild Bird Photography, featuring the
works of Arthur Morris, supplemented by images submitted by bird
photographers from around the world.

In Nov/Dec this year we will feature "Faces of Utah", with images by Kent
Miles, Rip Black and Dan Smith. In Nov/Dec 2001 we will feature Scenic
Utah, photographic work of the state, showing just before the 2002 Olympic
Games. In May/June 2003 we will feature The Great American West: The Black &
White Landscape, in which we will have some of the finest names in Western
Landscape photography.

Museum of Modern Art in New York City, Metropolitan Museum of Art in New
York City, Allbright-Knox in Buffalo, The Art Institute of Chicago, all
have photography departments or, at least, collections.

MOMA in NY has a photography section. From what I can remember the
collection seemed to be centered around the first half of the twentieth
century.
I also think the Guggienheim had a section, if not they certainly show
photography on a regular basis.

The Wadsworth Athenaeum in Hartford regularly has photo exhibits.
Recently it had one of Stieglitz and his era and now it has one of early
American daguerreotypes, including a famous one of John Brown, the
abolitionist, on loan from the Smithsonian. Speaking of the Smithsonian,
the Hirschhorn Collection of the Smithsonian always seems to have a number
of photographs on display.

National Portrait Gallery in London, and the (Scottish) National Portrait
Gallery in Edinburgh. The Scottish National Portrait Gallery has its own
curator of photography. The Barbican in London regularly show photography.

Henie-Onstad kunstsenter (Høvikodden) just outside Oslo regularly exhibit
photography.

Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, even though it is a specialised
photographic museum.

Eberhard,

Gee, from all the responses you'd think there's no photography west of
the Mississippi.

The Phoenix art museum has a section, and occasional major displays.

I believe the museum at the University of Arizona, in Tucson, also has
an extensive display.

Best regards,

Stew

Many thanks to all of you for your immediate and informative answers
to my call for help. You contributed a lot that I could drive my point
home. I mentioned BTW that you folks of the RPD supplied me with these
informations and the audience was surprised to learn about that
international community of photographers. Your assistance was greatly
acknowldeged.
