I just finished processing the first two rolls of TMX (in T-Max developer)
in my "new" Jobo CPE-2. They've come out fine, but I was surprised at the
black color of the pre-soak water when I emptied the drum. It looked like a
dilute solution of India ink.

Is this normal? What's coming off the film? Is this the anti-halation
coating washing off?

Just curious,

Rich

Yes. Some of the dye in the anti-halation coating. No, just the water
soluble dye in it. The developer is what actually removes the coating.

Also, depending on what film you're processing, the color of the
discarded pre-soak water will be various colors ranging from tannish to
blackish.

Ah! It was as I was typing the message that the antihalation coating might
be causing the color. As I'm not a photographic chemist I had no idea what
might be coming out.

TMX (T-Max 100).

Many thanks,
