I would like to produce stunning B&W portraits. Should I use films and
papers from Kodak or Ilford? And any specific film or paper type.

Please respond to han...@emirates.net.ae

Thanks and regards,

Personally, I found that the quality of my work improved drastically when I
started using the Kodak T-Max 400 CN (It's b&w film that goes through color
processing). It has a wide latitude.
I also like Ilford paper.

As far as paper selection goes, if you want quality prints I really urge you to
use ONLY fiber base paper. Even for proofing! Yes, washing it takes more time,
but so what? the results are well worth it! What is "stunning" to one person is
not always so to another. I think you'll find (after lots of experimentation
and record keeping) that for you there is a perfect fit between film,
developer, paper, paper developer. When it is right, everything works together.
Try to make, or even buy, what you consider a perfect print and then keep it in
the darkroom as a reminder of the tones and contrasts you are looking for.
Anyway... just my 0.02 worth.
