Should I vaccinate for Lymes??

Howdy All,
I am currently on the "hounds of a dilemma". We have a 3 year old
greyhound, who tests negative for lymes disease, but loves to wander through
tall grass. He has had 7 ticks already this year, 4 dog ticks, and 3 deer
ticks.

After asking three Vet's we got three answers as to whether it was safe or
not to vaccinate for lymes. I know the disease exists in this area, because
a friend's dog in the next town got lymes last year. However the vaccine is
new, and may be worse than running the risk of getting lymes.

Any thought or experiences on the subject would be greatly appreciated.
Especially if you know what this vaccine might do in a greyhound.

No experience, only thoughts. Do a search on dejanews for topic of lyme
disease or ticks. My short answer is no. I really don't think the vaccine
is safe. Lyme disease vaccines have apparently caused a lot of problems in
people also.

Hi, Bradley---my dog's **former** vet was always talking about all the lyme
disease occurring where I live. Since I'd found ticks on Critter
previously, I authorized the 2-shot series for lyme disease prevention.
After the first shot, Critter developed hot spots. He had also just gotten
his summer cut. When I *tried* to talk to the vet about the possibility of
a reaction, he said it must be burns from the groomer's clippers. After the
second shot, hot spots again appeared and the vet could no longer say it was
something else. (Don't you just *love* vets you have to prove stuff to,
because they have their own agenda, that doesn't include listening and
thinking?) However, he still maintained that the threat of lyme disease was
*worth* the hot spots, "which go away" in the vet's words. I elected to
forego these innoculations again, because of their adverse impact on
Critter's immune system.

A footnote: though I live in Southern Louisiana, where there have been
verified accounts of lyme disease, I later learned that the level of reports
the vet was spouting (a number of years ago) was not, in fact, in existence
at that time, nor have there ever been as many verified accounts as he was
alleging.....

ask the greyhound experts if the Preventic collar is ok on this breed - I
find it works great as does the Tick Arrest which contains the same chemical
that sits in the skin oils and does not go systemic in the dogs

Have you considered using Frontline? It is a liquid you apply to the dogs skin
in one spot. It is simple to use and we find it very helpful. It kills all
fleas and ticks who land on the dog. It is relatively inexpensive at about 33$
for a 3 month supply, and you can use it just during tick season if you like.
We recommend it at the vet office I work at, you may want to inquire about it
by calling your vet.

it all depends if your dog will be in areas where lymes disease is veery
high. the state you live in. i hesitate because the vaccine is new and
not proven yet ---your vet is the guines pig. it hasnt been out long
enough and you dont know the long term effect.-------i would use the
frontline or the biospot etc. -----you do not need the vet office to
get it and can go to any good pet store like pet smart and get it.
make sure it says kills ticks----some just kill fleas. that is if ticks
are in your area. if you are not going into the woods or traveling at
rest stops---or going with your dog to areas to walk near a zoo
etc.-------------look up--- drsfostersmith.com----- and you will find a
catalog you can send for for all the different flea and tick ones at
half the cost----------they will send you the catalog and it is great.
i should get a percentage of all the business i give them. ha!!!!
do not use all year around unless you have to , i only use 4 months of
the year. the less the better for your dog. sometimes even dont
use for a couple monts to give the dog a break during the off seasons.

Exactly, and Iost two of my dogs vaccinated for it from weird stuff that is
not happening in my dogs that were not vaccinated.

I personally will never vaccinate for Lymes again, EVER, and I live in a
Lymes affected state.
