Please help if you are familiar with this situation. As you can
imagine, my wife and I are devastated. It's like finding out your kid
has a congenital, terminal illness.....

I have NO experience with polycystic kidneys in dogs. BUT my 9 yr old
daughter has them, or PKD as it is called in adults. If the kind your dog
has is anything close to the kind humans get, I would advise you to relax.
You mentioned your dog has elevated protein, did the vet do any tests to
see how much kidney function she has? That is the important thing. As
long as the kidney function is fine, your dog will be fine. My daughter
has only 75% of her kidney function, and she is as normal and active as
any other 9 yr. old. Of course we are monitoring her closely.
This is interesting to me, I would welcome a vet's opinion on this
disease in dogs.
