Try giving him Glucosamine and Chondroitin for the arthritic hip problem.
It was tested on dogs with good results.
Your on the right track with flax oil, but you can also pour olive oil on
his food to give him the oils needed to impove his coat.

Good Luck

Animal fat is better as a supplement for dogs than vegetable oils.

Try some EFA supplements (essential fatty acids)--great for their skin & coat
and has good vitamins. Any supplements will take awhile to get into their
systems and do some good. I use 3V caps (not animal fat--don't listen to
Elaine). I can't help but say to look at KV Vet Supply--was paying $15 for 60
3V caps at the vets. Now I'm getting 250 caps for $28.

yeah, the compressed processed stuff sounds much better..

your dog will love ya for it...

NOT!

give your dog the fat from your pork chops, the skin from your chicken,
the top of the roast beef. that stuff's all /no/ good for you, but *is*
good for the dog...

why complicate things?

I used to get a liquid from the vet called efa-zed+. It had Omega 3 and
Omega 6 fatty acids. It really helped my dogs with their dry skin
problems.
My guys stomachs couldn't tolerate the fat from pork chops and skins
from chickens. If I gave Tosca those foods we would be up all night
with a very sick dog. It depends on how tolerant your dog's digestive
system is.

true, but that's pretty specific... and everything in moderation, yes?

MOST dogs do great on an animal fat supplement. There is a little bit of
knowledge required in providing the supplement.

1. Go easy at first if your dog has been animal fat deprived previously.
Start with not more than about a tablespoonful, on it's regular food.

2. SOME dogs are prone to pancreatitis, and can't have any fats at all. This
is not a normal condition. These dogs are metabolic cripples. The inability
to digest fats would kill them in the wild, the first time they snacked on
an actual piece of fatty meat.
Pancreatic cases need very careful management by a professional. NEVER feed
anything not on their prescribed diet.

3. For normal dogs, animal fat supplements can be increased in time to up to
1/2c. of fat per meal for a medium to large dog. Feed supplement with meal.
Do not feed animal fat separately, as it cannot be digested alone. Dog will
not be able to use it.

No, you don't need to buy special chemical lipids in capsule form, or any
other artificial specialized products. The fat present in raw chicken,
hamburger, turkey or any other raw meats would be fine. As would the pan
drippings from household cooking.

See, you did it again, Elaine. I love it when you get down to serious
business and use your knowledge to help others. No coal in the stocking for
you this year!!

Except that she's wrong. Cooked fats are not healthy for dogs, and can in
fact be dangerous and contribute to problems like pancreatitis. Raw fat can
provide some EFA's, the others can be found in supplements such as flax seed
oil or fish oil. Elaine isn't interested in what is good for dogs, she only
cares about what is cheapest. But I'm glad she's found a friend.

Except I'm right. Although raw fats are preferable, any well dog can eat
some cooked food including cooked fats.

>Cooked fats are not healthy for dogs

Read the ingredients on the side of ANY dogfood bag. Animal fat is one of
the ingredients. I sure hope you didn't think the spray-on fat they put on
kibble was raw. It's not.

> and can in
> fact be dangerous and contribute to problems like pancreatitis.

Pancreatitis is a disease, prevalent in several genetic lines. Pancreatitis
is not a normal condition. A dog would very quickly die in the wild if it
couldn't digest animal fat.

Animal fat is a natural food for dogs. A dog's natural food cannot cause a
disease like pancreatitis. The illness must already be present in the dog
for fat to trigger an incident.

Fish oil is good, but there is no way vegetable oils can replace animal fats
in a carnivore's diet.

Don't be stupid. Why throw away animal fats that would benefit your dog,
only to turn around and buy it back in the form of spray-on animal fat in
kibble?

Animal fat is not particularly good for humans, but then maybe you don't
really care for dogs. Perhaps you only want to use dogs as human
subsitiutes.

Hi,

I just wanted to thank everyone for the ideas. I received quite a few
private emails as well, and I think first of all I am going to try the
Medi-cal dog food. I am also going to try and get something called Missing
link and see if that helps. I really appreciate all the advice from
everyone.

Thank You

Sandy
