Dorothy,
My only problem with this is that my pictures are MY pictures. I think
that you should allow the photographer to keep the copywrite on their
own pictures. Maybe a thought for your next promotion. Maybe you will
get more entries that way.

One more question. Which organizations are considered "worthy animal
welfare organizations"? They may not be our favorite 'charities' to
donate anything to. Like..... maybe you are affiliated with fanatics
that we would rather be disassociated with.

Just my personal preference, but I always avoid photo competitions which
claim ownership or copyright of any entries submitted. As a serious
amateur photographer, I value my copyright ownership of my best photographs
(which presumably would be the ones submitted to a competition!!), and to lose
it would mean that I would lose the right to enter the same photo in future
competitions, exhibitions, etc. Basically, copyright clauses give the
competition organisers a license to use your photograph in any way they
see fit - it could just be used in a brochure, or it could be used in a
national advertising campaign for which you, the photographer, should have
been paid a lot more than first prize in a competition...

Having said that, this competition doesn't specify copyright - just the
actual photograph becomes the property of the organisers, which could be
taken to mean just the physical paper on which the image is printed!!
Also, why not return photographs? It costs a lot of money and effort to
make enlargements or even reprints. I've run photo competetions myself
(for a student photographic society) and it's really no effort to return
entries in a pre-paid addressed envelope.

Always check what the fate of the entries submitted will be.
Most competitions allow the photographer to retain the copyright and
reserve rights to use entries for a specific limited purpose. My advice is
avoid those that don't do this!

These are just comments about photo competitions in general - I wish this
particular competition by Paw Prints the very best, and I would be happy
to enter it myself subject to a clarification about the copyright issues!!

To clarify the question about copyright brought up by several people,
the original message was probably not as carefully worded as it should
have been. The intention was not to claim copyright to the photos
submitted, which I agree should remain with the photographer, but to
emphasize that actual physical photos submitted will not be returned.

The reason for this is that if the photos are used for a calendar it
will be several months before the printing will be done, and based on
past experience I know it can be very difficult keeping track of
photos and self-addressed envelopes over several months. Also, photos
are often marked up and damaged by printers in processing them.
