I thought I had heard or read that dogs are color blind. Is that True??

My husband has a pointer for lecturing with a red light. We have lots of
fun with our springer puppy with that "red dot". We shine it on the snow
or floor and the puppy chases it . Not the same effect with a regular
flashlight. Anyway I was wondering why the red dot light was so
interesting to the puppy.

Dogs are not color blind. They do not have as broad a range of color
vision as humans, and they cannot make the same level of fine distinction
between slight variations, but they are not color blind.

Your pup probably likes it b/c it's really bright for it's point size,
fast moving and is new to the him/her.

There was a very long thread on this in June and it contained lots of
real references. The title of the thread was "color perception in
the GSD" (I think) - anyway if you search for the author slindsay and
subject color in the group rec.pets.dogs.behavior you should be able
to find it pretty easily. Bottom line is that there is likely some
red-green color blindness, but not blue-yellow. So while a red bumper
might disappear in the grass a yellow one might not.

Proper training is not the mere imposition of rules, but the teaching of
skills that allow the dog to become a fuller member of human society.

I would guess the red light is more concentrated and intense than a
flashlight and has nothing to do with color. The bull doesn't go after the
red but rather the motion. I have read that dogs can see some color in the
blue range but that's about it. My own dog kind of proved that to me. She
knew a friend with a maroon van that she always recognized. One day there
was a van identical to her friends but it was blue. She ran right to it.
Guide dogs are trained to recognize the position of a stop light, not the
color.
On the other hand dogs have terrific night vision and will never miss a
motion.

I heard somewhere that dogs can see blue and green, but not red. As a result,
they cant see full color like us.
