Many canned cat foods come in both pate and "in gravy" forms. Persia is
fussy about her canned food. She does not like any of the canned food
"in gravy". Let me rephrase that, she likes the gravy. She won't eat
much, if any, of the meat, so I feel it's a waste of money.

How about yours? Gravy or no gravy?

Boyfie doesn't mind if his food is in jelly or gravy or pate but he does
prefer pouches rather than canned. His beloved Whiskas (if canned) comes
in 400g cans which means it has to go in the fridge for the next day (he
gets 100g per meal twice a day) plus dry sprinkles at bedtime. Although it
is cheaper to buy a can, I like him to have "that just opened, it's yummy"
experience.
100g x 2 wet meat meals a day is recommended for neutered boycats,
especially those who are quite fond of their duvet ;-)
In your position, if Persia doesn't like the gravy variety i.e. she doesn't
eat the meat in it, I wouldn't buy it for her.
CRF kitties can get very fussy about their food as I know only too well.
Try not to deviate too much from her Rx kidney food.

Edgar and Agatha (both 4 years old, same litter) both like Fancy Feast gravy
stuff, preferably fish. They cannot abide the "pate" foods, and generally
shy away from chicken and beef. But give them fish or some shrimp mixture in
gravy, and they'll dig in. They have dry kibble available all day long, and
they share a can in the morning and evening. And on our recent vet visit,
Edgar LOST one pound in the last year (was 12, now 11) and Agatha has
remained a svelte 11 lbs.

Yes, I can understand that. Persia doesn't seem to mind if the can has
been in the fridge. I don't have the measurements but she gets about
1/3 of a can of FF. It's not a lot, just a dab. Then it gets covered
and into the fridge it goes. I've never bought cat food in pouches.
Persia being Persia, she'd probably like it once or twice then give me
"the look". :)

She was fussy about the gravy thing *years* before she had kidney
problems. I recently made a mistake while purchasing a dozen cans of
FF. I accidentally picked up some of the "in gravy" FF. Sure enough,
she licked up the gravy but ignored most of the meat. So I exchanged
them for the pate the next time I was in the store. It was purely my
fault for not paying enough attention.

Not to worry about my monitoring her health, although I appreciate your
concern.

She does eat her Rx kidney food. She's had a lot of health issues over
the years. I always pay attention.

When she merely (ha!) had bladder problems and they prescribed c/d, I
started out free-feeding her. She quickly got up to 16 lbs! So per the
vet's advice, she only got fed twice a day. She slimmed down, but she's
a big cat.

When she developed hyperthyroidism she dropped a *lot* of weight. It
happened so fast it was alarming. After she was treated the vet told me
to free-feed her the Rx kibble.

Then came the kidney problems and a different Rx kibble. It's always
available to her. She actually likes it so yes, she eats plenty of it.
Every time I walk by the bowl I give it a little stir with my fingers.
I can see she's been eating it because there's a little empty spot in
the middle of the bowl :) I hear her crunching in the middle of the
night, too. :)

Further, when I give her a dab of canned food she doesn't like, if she's
actually hungry she'll turn away and start crunching on the Rx food.
It's all good.

Of my two that eat mostly canned food they like both. In gravy for
breakfast, pate style for dinner. My other two will eat some of the
dinner but rarely touch the breakfast food.

Scarlett also loves the FF Elegant Medley chicken and turkey flavors
with the heavy cream sauce and greens.

I'm guessing the greens are barely discernible since we already talked
about cats digesting (or not) greens. :)

I know that, but she is now very elderly with CRF and personally I would not
be feeding her anything else but a kidney diet while she will eat it.
Anything else loads her kidneys with protein which she cannot process any
more.

Persia prefers chicken or turkey. She likes some of the blends such as
turkey & giblets or chicken & liver. And to my surprise she's
absolutely nuts over the beef pate! Fish, not so much. She seems to
like the salmon pate. Not so fond of the other fishy food.

You do realize I've talked this over with her vet and gotten the okay,
right? She *mostly* eats the Rx kidney food.

Reading what you wrote makes it sound like Persia is at deaths door.
She's not.

Mine usually eat the gravy, first, but by morning most of the meat is
gone, too. (They particularly like Friskies new "Rise and Shine" with
meat or fish in a "gravy" of scrambled egg.)

Smart cat! (I prefer salmon to most other fish, too - too bad it's so
expensive in forms available to humans.)

I go through 4 cans of FF per day. They get two for breakfast, two for
dinner. They eat most of it these days. I cut back on the dry food so
that Bonnie and Rhett will *have* to eat some canned. No one is going
hungry, that's for sure.

I have some cans of what FF calls "sliced" that I need to exchange. No
one really likes those even though they're in gravy. They like the
"grilled" variety.

I'm so glad that she's doing well on her prescription food. One less
thing to worry about.

If you get to where you really need to get more wet food into her, try
blenderizing some of the ones she has liked the gravy from. You can
even add a little water or low-salt broth to maximize the water content.
If she likes gravy, she may go for something that's all gravy.

The Princess Rita HATES gravy with a passion. She must have pate, carefully mashed with a fork.

Except for the new Fancy Feast 'mornings' stuff, which has egg in it. She apparently LOVES that stuff, gravy and all.

Definitely try a can to see if she likes it. I thought Rita would hate it, but wow, she is just WILD about it.
I recently tried the Friskies version of it, too, and she likes that one too!
(I always read the labels, and the first item on the label must be MEAT of some kind. Friskies has water, then meat. That's acceptable.)

I sort of chop Persia's FF pate up a little with a fork. She eats a
couple of bites the minute I dish it up in the morning. Then she waits
a bit and eats the remaining bite or two. Throughout the day (and
night!) she grazes on the Rx kibble.

Maybe we all forget that cats have managed to survive for thousands of years
by eating birds and rodents, including their crop/stomach contents and not
be seduced by the cat food manufacturers that provide high end expensive
food that contains only meat. It's in their interest to tell you that's
best and they rely on you to be a good parent..

If Boyfie catches what would normally be a natural prey for him, he eats
everything if it's small and only cannot manage the wings on a collared
dove, although he did leave one leg as well.
I think he was too full.

My conclusion is that I am not the slightest bit concerned if there is a bit
of corn or greens in his Whiskas.

Try and keep her on Rx food as much as you can. It's designed to keep her
alive as long as possible.
Ordinary cat food, including FF will load her failing kidneys with too much
protein which she has to excrete through them.

Boyfie would live on dry food given the opportunity but it's bad for boy
cats winkles so he gets wet as main. and 2 tablespoons of dry at bedtime and
that is only because he likes it so much and the dry food has to say that is
good for urinary health.

The gravy contains gluten.

My Splodge (RB) was gluten-intolerant. He was more easygoing about his
food than any other cat I've known - if it was smaller than his head
he'd eat it. But if he ever got gravy cat food by mistake, we could
tell as soon as we opened the front door. He'd have an attack of the
most unbelievably smelly diarrhoea in the bath.

So we stopped buying gravy catfood while we had Splodge, and since the
others never started eating it, we still don't buy it.

My Edgar and Agatha have a rule: No gravy, we don't touch it. So we get
them two kinds of Fancy Feast, both with fish, and we alternate. They like
both.

I tried a couple of pate types when the cats came to us. They looked, they
smelled, and they walked away.
