Some sadness from Susan and Jerry

For some reason, I like to think that the old gang still lurks about rpb in
the slim chance that a post from a familiar addy is forthcoming.
Friday (9/23) was my birthday. It was also the designated birthday for one
of our budgies, Shlomo. When I came home Friday evening, Shlomo, who had
been acting ill for the past few weeks, was at the bottom of the cage and he
passed a short while afterward. He would have been 9 years old.
Our other budgie, Tango, was never a finger-friendly bird. His usual
behavior was to run away from a hand or a finger and to make crying noises.
When we first got him, he seemed okay and perhaps stick-friendly. In any
event, since Shlomo showed signs of illness, Tango would be there for him,
with them both leaning up against each other.
Tango's behavior also changed in a significant way. Where before he would
run away from a hand, he developed a social/sexual behavior where he would
show in interest in beak-bopping with the finger/hand, but then grab hold
and bite down. If you were fast and observant, he would not be able to grab
hold. But after escaping his nip, he would strut around like a proud
peacock... as if he was enjoying the game.
After Shlomo passed, Tango has now reverted back to his old behavior of
running away from the hand and crying. We also purchased another budgie on
Saturday, not only to keep Tango company... for he appeared to be looking
for his old buddy and looked so sad, but also for our own solace as well.
So far they both get along. The new addition, tentatively called "Captain,"
is curious, finger-friendly, and despite being clipped, is strong and can
fly short distances. He has learned that the cage is where he wants to go
when he tires of playtime, and I've suggested that we play with him in
another room so he does not see the cage. He seems to prefer going back to
the cage rather than a long play period.
Anyone still out there? Anyone else experience the changes (almost from one
moment to the other) in behavior that Tango has shown? Would love to hear
from some old friends.

I'm sorry for your loss, Jerry. It's never easy to lose any pet companion.

As tp Tango's behavior, I don't know. There are generalities in
sexual/dominance behaviors but each bird is an individual. I'm glad you
got Tango another friend.
