Given the route and the "couple of CG stops" I don't have any clue how
much diversion you can handle.
One thing you should not miss (and it is about on your route) is the
Peshtigo Fire Museum. This fire was the same time as the great Chicago
fire, but it got no press because everything (1200 misq) burned up.
And, if you can take the time (I might bore the girls, but you never
know) there is a neat maritime museum in Manitowoc.

If you can, check out whitefish point. They have a mariner museum.
It was where the Edmund Fitzgerald was heading before it sank.
Near newberry is Tahquamenon Falls state park. Off the beaten path and
is home to Longfellow's Hiawatha.

The falls are very scenic. The water in the river is tinted from the leaves
in the forest. Perfectly clear but colored like iced tea.
There are two sets of falls, lower and upper. Be sure to visit both.
