Does anything matter anymore? Heard that Hostess Twinkies are going to be unavailable in the future. How will I get my quick sugar fix while driving my RV?

Someone will buy the brands. The issue came about because people are
buying less of that stuff then they used to, declining sales and a less
then nimble management.

Noticed what is happening to McDonalds sales since they started posting
the calorie count of their selections? A couple weeks ago we stopped at
Jack-in-the-Box for the first time in a long time(this year?), they had
done the same thing, so SWMBO didn't order what she "wanted", the
calories scared her, she ordered something smaller and lower in calories

Part of the reason was declining sales but the other half of the
equation was the union that struck. Just like the Air Traffic
Controllers these union members taught the owners something!!!!!!

http://www.usatoday.com/story/money/business/2012/11/16/hostess-twinkies-ding-dongs-wonder-bread-going-out-of-business/1708409/

"The company, which had been in and out of bankruptcy restructuring,
was already struggling from a high cost structure and sluggish
consumer demand for its products. Its fate was sealed by a confluence
of negative events including rising commodity costs and competitive
pressures, says Erin Lash, analyst at Morningstar.

The company had warned it would file a motion in U.S. Bankruptcy Court
to shut operations if enough workers didn't end a weeklong strike by 5
p.m. ET Thursday. On Friday, it followed through on that threat."

I have an app on my phone that gives me the nutrition info for most
meals at most chain restaurants. I look stuff for carbohydrate content
for Barry who is diabetic and has to know how many carbs he's ingesting
to have his pump give him a proper bolus. It is scary.

We had broccoli cheese soup at Quiznos yesterday. It was very tasty and
filling and not nutritionally frightening.

Jerry, I think that was Mark who preferred Peter Pan PB.
My choice is Jif with preserves from McCutcheon's

https://www.bobmccutcheon.com/newmccutcheons/indexmain.htm

My favorite is Cherry, followed closely by Peach, Black Raspberry, and
Orange Marmalade. we usually order a Half dozen jars at a time.
At Christmas time we order extras to give as gifts.

We once stopped at a winery in MO on a ridge overlooking the
Mississippi. We tasted some wine and talked to the owner. He asked us
what we were doing the next day and we told him we were just hanging in
the area (Cape Girardaux. Then he asked us if we wanted to harvest grapes.

We came back the next day and worked with other locals harvesting
grapes. We got a nice lunch and cold soda and $36 each cash, no social
security numbers. We bought some wine of the variety we'd harvested with
part of the money and I made Barry take me out for supper as I was not
going to cook for I had labored in the vineyards all day.

We had some truly amazing adventures and experiences when we full timed.

An oenophile is a pretentious wino who pontificates about the merits
of a 2011 Thunderbird vs a 2012 Ripple. Or if he's not homeless, it'll
be about a 2008 jug wine vs a 2009 box wine.

Then there are the geographic oenophiles - wherever the wino lives,
the wine from somewhere else is always better. And the farther away,
the better.

And we can't forget the monetary oenophiles - the more the wino pays
for it, the better it is.

I have an issue with figs. They trigger a terrible repressed memory
from my past into the present.

As a kid, I used my parents Kadota fig tree as a snack station too!
One time while doing so, I noticed the fig had more seeds than
usual? Looking down, at half of the fig in my hand, I discovered to
my horror, that it was crawling with ants! Yowza! I just hate
reliving that godawful nightmare! HawHawHaw!

Hostess has been on the down hill slide for years. Short of a major
overhaul of both management and operations the company was toast (pun
intended). The union action just move the end time up a bit but not by
much.

Disregarding the finer points this is a good over view.

Pretty much sums up what I found elsewhere.

Now if somebody could explain why upper management deserves a bonus
for losing money.... ;-)

The worst of the management problems were caused by the unions - and the
stupidity of management giving in to their demands. Just a couple
examples:

"The work rules imposed in union contracts required the company that
makes Twinkies, which also makes Wonder Bread, to deliver these two
products to stores in separate trucks. Moreover, truck drivers were not
allowed to load either of these products into their trucks. And the
people who did load Twinkies into trucks were not allowed to load Wonder
Bread, and vice versa. All of this was obviously intended to create
more jobs for the unions' members. But the needless additional costs
that these make-work rules created ended up driving the company into
bankruptcy."

The company should have dealt with the unions years ago either by
refusing to negotiate or by moving to non-union areas.

Union policy. If the patient is sick, kill it and take it out of
its misery.....than blame the corpse for the loss of jobs.

Good analogy. Even our resident liberals have probably played
Monopoly and might understand the dilemma we face.

Maybe Monopoly should add a place with 10 acres, goats and chickens?
