using agent for newsgroups

My first concern is loosing this newsgroup when ATT drops the newsgroup
service.
I remember using a product called Agent many years ago. That's about I
remember however. Except it was Free.
It is no longer free but if my internet provider stops providing newsgroups,
will I be able to use Agent? If so, is it difficult to use?

Agent is no longer free I believe,,,get
Thunderbird (From the creators of FireFox), it is
free.

Sign up for a news server - any news server, possibly something like
astraweb - and then use exactly the same news reader that you are using
right now. there is no reason to make things more complicated than they
need to be. You can use any news server with your current reader, all you
have to do is configure the newsreader. Even lowly Outlook Express will
work.

Agent won't solve your problem if you no longer have a newsgroup feed.
You can however buy Agent at www.forteinc.com
To get the newsgroup feed go to www.astraweb.com and buy the $10 for
25 GB package which will last a lifetime if all you do is d/l text
newsgroups.

Agent, Outlook Express and the rest is software that allows you to read
usenet. You also need someone to supply an actual usenet feed, such as
Astraweb, Giganews, etc. ATT was supplying this feed. You can still read
usenet with whatever software you were using before, but you need an
alternate source to supply usenet messages.

Astraweb can be configured with any browser you choose. I prefer
SeaMonkey at present since it does everything I need it to do.

To put it in TV terms, the feed is who is sending out the broadcast -
doesn't matter if it is local cable, DirectTV, over the air, the broadcast
is the same. Agent, on the other hand, is the equilivant of your TV - again
it doesn't matter if it is old technology analog, Plasma, or LCD, it shows
you the same feed.
Well, in this case, you used to get your feed from ATT, and read it using
Agent. If you switch to Astraweb, all that means is that you will now be
getting the feed from Astra, and you can continue to read it with Agent if
you want.

BTW, there is no need to change browsers or even change ISPs unless you
wish to. Just configure Astraweb as your news server in whatever
browser you
are using and ATT will be happy to deliver it.
At least you wouldn't have to change your e-mail address if you did that.

They still provide a free Agent AFAIK. I paid for mine 14 years ago
and have managed all the free updates.

Spend $10 and get Astroweb and you have access to the news servers
again. Now, use the name & password you selected when you sign up for
Astroweb and USE the SAME program you have already been using. YOU
DON'T NEED AGENT!!!
