If you plan on cooking a turkey, at a campground, do not deep fry it!
As soon as the water from the frozen bird mixes with the oil, you will get
a 20 foot plus fireball.

Use a barbeque pit or the oven.

By all means, share some of it with us.

You've got me confused. I have never been able to successfully create
the mythical fried turkey fireball despite numerous attempts. What's the
secret?

I've seen it done on TV. I was thinking mythbusters but I can't find
it there so it may have been local news. You have to fill the pot too
full then drop the turkey fast enough to splash and atomize some oil.
It is not easy. ;-)

So far, I have fried about 12 turkeys. (Not at the same time.) Also
about 10 chickens. My best results are obtained using rather smaller
turkeys (18 to 20 pounds).

No fire balls yet. But, I have never tried to fry a frozen turkey.

I am trying to imagine how I would get the turkey fryer, gallons of
oil, and extra propane tank crammed into my little Casita to even get
it to a campground.

Most people make the mistake of putting in to much oil.
Then dropping it into the fryer.

All the feathers come off in the oil anyway. It's also inhumane to just
dunk a turkey into boiling oil. Besides you gotta tie their legs
together or get scratched real bad. Now, cats....that's something else,
you can use duct tape.

You're welcome at our table. Our youngest daughter is flying down and
our widowed neighbor lady has also been invited but we will have more
than enough
to feed you all. Roast stuffed turkey, mashed potatoes, turkey gravy,
peas or whole kernel corn, cranberries (not those canned ones) pumpkin
pie with whipped or ice cream.

Yesterday my brother told me about such a segment on Mythbusters - he said
they got a 30 foot fireball.

The big thing in creating a large fireball, is making sure that the turkey
is wet. Water is the ingredient most needed in getting the oil to explode
and start a fire.

why? It amazes me that people want to do it themselves, rather than buy one
pre-fryed/cooked and flash frozen and kept in the freezer... While many
restaurants/grocery chains sell em, i usually get a couple at popeyes each
year (they started selling em in 2007, fried then roasted then flash
frozen... i like the cajun flavor....one for turkey day, and one for xmas)

Cost and quality. Half the cost. I refrigerate and reuse the oil. I
can buy the size and kind of turkey I want, I get all of the turkey
bits to make giblet gravy. Plus, It's fun.

Tomorrow I am supposed to get my Butterball Turkey Fryer.
Went to Sam's to get the Peanut Oil and it was a lot cheaper
than the base and even the internet at $27.88 for 4.5 gallons
and also got the cajun spices with injector. Not sure what
or when but I am going to have one deep fried Turkey soon.
Even if I have to eat the darn thing alone!

I was responding to the statement " It amazes me that people want to
do it themselves." Mine was a perfectly reasonable response to that
assertion.

Sage/sausage or raisin dressing? If sage send me a map. We will

Sorry, I don't care for sage dressing. The AF mess halls turned me off
on their version of dressing and it always had a strong sage flavor.

Our recipe has a pound of ground beef or pork, croutons from home-baked
bread (even store-bought croutons will work) ground liver, heart and
gizzard from the turkey, a raw egg, onion and celery. Just pepper and
salt.....no other spices. Don't stint on the celery and onions both of
which should be run through a blender.

When my wife was still working I would prepare the entire Thanksgiving
meal for us and guests. Esposa would mash the potatoes just before the
dinner was served but I made the rest. I recall my dubious grandson
asking his dad "can grandpa cook" when he saw that grandma wasn't in the
kitchen.

My cranberries were always a big hit. I used orange juice and a small
amount of powdered Hawaiian Punch Kool Aid to modify the tartness some
people don't like.
