I'm looking for information on Raytheon Marine electronics. How they compare
with other brands, your experience with them, pluses and minuses. Any
information would be greatly appreciated.

Raytheon also makes the Apelco line of merchandise. All my electronics are not
either of these, but I haven't ever heard anything bad about them.

I use an Apelco 465 and have been very pleased with its performance. The
screen is one of the easiest to see with light and contrast controls easy to
use. I do not like fish symbols and you can take them off with the unit so
it does everything I want including built in temperature. The A scope
feature is really nice when you are trying to hold on structure also. I
would go ahead and buy one, you will like it.

I honestly don't think you've asked many people.

When I first started working on the boat I run now it was totally outfitted in
raytheon and apelco, only took me 2 years to replace every piece on the boat,
(about 10,000 dollars worth of stuff) Each time I asked the tech who was
installing the new piece about raytheon, the response was always the same, they
rated it just below crap. I personally know I was very displeased with the
gps, autopilot, radar, plotter, sounder, and depth guages. aside from those
pieces everything else may be allright. But I'd certainly look elsewhere.

The opinions I express may be nuts, but they're are all mine, and have nothing
to do with FBN.

I fish with a friend who has new Raytheon stuff.
The 750 LCD finder ....has nice features but the fish finding function is
very poor. could do better with say a Humming bird if you are looking for
lower end stuff.
The SL 72 LCD radar is great for a small boat , I am going to buy one
myself.
The Auto Pilot, hunts allot, I don't am not buying one.
The Chart plotter/GPS/map great detail but not user friendly.
Hope this helps.

I own a V850 color fishfinder and have been very satisfied with the unit in
five years of operation. It is relatively simple to operate and has great
fishfinding features as well as some decent navigation features, when
interfaced with either a loran or GPS sensor. I also have Raytheon loran/GPS
track plotter (I think the model number is 365?) that I'm very happy with.

If you're looking at Raytheon-class stuff, look at Furuno. Go into
the cabins of 99% of your commercial fishing vessels, you'll see
Furuno. I've got an amber Furuno video sounder (FMV-603) in my
center console that's 6 years old. It's sat for a week baking in
100 degree heat, freezing in 0-degree weather, you name it, and it
still works as good as the day it rolled out of the factory.

Great performance, too. Set it to show 15 feet of depth, then "lower"
that 15-foot band all the way down to 1000+ feet - it'll show shrimp
rising off the bottom.

If you're looking for a tough inland-lake type sounder for regular
lake fishing, go the the top end Lowrances. X70, etc.

I bought the JRC 1000 radar for my 18' boat. The salesman said that
JRC makes the Ratheon equipment. Is there any truth to this?

The radar works fine. I wish I could buy a nice mount for it that
doesn't cost half the price of the radar.

Up until this year all of Raytheon's Marine Electronics sold under the Raytheon
name were manufactured by Japan Radio Co. The designs are Raytheon, the
assembly is JRC
