I generally see about one bear every couple years here in Colorado. I
ran across bears at streamside the last two times I was out fishing.
This at streams miles apart. Those streamside berries must be very
appealing right now.

yeah, they'd likely have to shoot the bear. ;)

A lame attempt at humor based on the letter dropping (Stev(e)) thread that was
active at the time.
No doubt Dave! After that picture of the moth and
"pwetty" flowers, I am starting to wonder about Ol'
Stevo. The scary part is he actually knew them by
name..... <bseg>

I agree. Especially when looking at them through my

I really like gardening. People tell me I have a green thumb. You should
see my rose garden in California.
I guess it's all part of my "macho Idaho cowboy act." :-)
the black bears i've seen in the wild are incredible-looking animals,
making a living in difficult places. they lift my spirit whenever i'm
lucky enough to see one (not to mention my adrenalin). i'd be more
satisfied taking a good photo and putting it on the wall. with your
camera skills, one day i hope you feel the same. now, as for
ducks...well, i know a particularly good cooker of duck breasts, and you
can have all the duck skins and feathers... <g>

I think they call that "illegal" out here. No dogs or
bait allowed. Personally, I think what you described
should be called "poaching" since it is much akin to
shooting animals in cages. Definitely no honor in those
types of hunts.

They are neat looking. I have never hunted them before
but I need to get at least one. Sometimes they are even
considered pests out here because they get into people's
bird feeders, garbage cans and such in search of food.
Of course I imagine we have many more of them out here
than you do in NC so that could have something to do
with it.
I have kind of felt sorry for the bears over the last
couple of years. Several years of drought and their
forage base in the mountains is very low. They have
been coming down the creeks and rivers in search of
berries and ending up in the middle of town. I have
seen 3 in my yard this summer and don't even want to
imagine how many have passed through that I haven't
seen. We are finally starting to get some rain and
should be getting some for several days if the weather
people finally guessed right, but it is too little, too
late. It just didn't seem right hunting them this year
since I am imagine they are damn near starving plus
having to dodge all of the fires so I didn't get a tag.
I'll wait until spring and see.
