amurrican i feel practically unnatural if i don't vent about national
politics once every four years, thus:
i really wanted to see hillary win the dem nomination. one tough
lady, who dealt with a bad hand with patience and grace, and who has
always carried most of the big stick in that political partnership.
also one fine speaker; who, like any great trial lawyer, really
believes what she is saying, while she is saying it, even if she knows
it's not true. the woman has been physically closer to the president
of the u.s. for eight years than anyone else, at least during the
times when his eyes weren't rolling back in his head, and is so very,
very comfortable being in the presence of, and *in possession of*
power. someone in her camp, maybe even with her full support,
underestimated obama, early, and lived to regret it.
which leads me to the candidate. i feel like i suppose those
folks my age in 1960 felt when confronted with john kennedy. on the
one hand, a very bright, very attractive and witty man, with a
beautiful, intelligent wife, but who had almost no real grindstone
experience--a political movie star, with the ability to look like we
all wished we could look, and speak the way he spoke in front of
millions. but how will he do when the pressure is on, alone, with
just himself and his sense of right and wrong, and courage, and
control of the mightiest power on the planet...well, as it turns out,
he stood straight up and dealt with the most dangerous few weeks in
the history of this planet in a very satisfactory fashion, pitted
against a near psychopath russian on one side, and curtis lemay on the
other. well, brother bobby was there, to provide interaction at the
highest level, and even more integrity. i don't know if obama has a
"bobby". i hope he does. maybe it's his wife.
well, in fairness, the opposition should be considered. john
mccain, by all accounts, demonstrated great courage under wartime
agony. he came back home as a hero, and married (finally?) this
trophy bride with beaucoup cash. he is an old man, who often does the
foolish things that old men are prone to do; viz--the harley
nightmare, where the sound of thousands of expensive toys wasting gas
are termed "the sound of freedom" by sen. mccain, and dearest cindy is
proposed as a candidate in the "beauty contest" in which former
participants wear little more than three inches of saddle leather
around their pubic areas. be that as it may, the coup de gras for me
was the selection of ms. palin as the vp of the us. obviously, at his
age, that selection is far more important, ultimately, than obama's.
it says to the american people, "here, in my judgement, is the person,
after myself, who should be the leader of this county." that is so
patently absurd as to simply put an end to further discussion. it is
either evidence of the control that the right wing religious nuts have
over mcain's electibility concerns, or simply evidence of the fact
that john mcain is, himself, emotionally and intellectually,
undependable.
so, carry on, my friends. for myself, the issue is settled.

If I might add to that. As a teacher, when a lesson is not going well,
sometimes its best to just stop and completely change direction. "OK,
this isn't working. Lets just put the books away and everyone get into
groups of three. Lets try this another way..." Usually the best thing
possible is just a paradigm shift, and the rest follows.
Even without the (valid) analysis you provide, the malaise and myopia
that America has suffered publicly from for the past 7 years, as well
as the steadfast and pervasive erosion of faith and trust in the
government both domestically and abroad, require a paradigm shift. A
'handyman' can't put this together again, resoldering old plumbing and
putting a fresh coat of paint on dry rot...what is needed is a Phoenix
from the ashes. McCain might be capable of taking over the reins when
Bush jumps from the front seat, but what we need is not someone
capable of stepping into the shoes that are there. We need someone to
come in and completely rebuild the game. To watch Bush and Co's
machine grind to a halt in the dust from afar, not to try to salvage
it or redirect it for their purposes. "Let's try this another way..."
In this case, and more than any other time in the history of the US,
we actually NEED someone with limited experience. Someone who is not
building their power base on the status quo, but someone who has a
completely new set of eyes and ears, and who will have the support and
patience of the world as he takes over.
If extensive experience were a real prerequisite, we'd not be in the
mess Bush has put us in in the first place.

election is a no-brainer, but then that was the case in the previous

Yeah, it really is too bad. At one time, I could have voted for McCain,
and even the tiniest bit of policy outline he offered last night made the
wee bit of sense-- at least the part about regearing unemployment systems
to meet 21 century needs. But just about every time somebody cites one of
his "maverick" stances, you can check it off on the "McCain's caved on
that" checklist. The Palin thing just erases him right off my page.
Frankly, I think his total change in personality since the 2000 election is
a serious thing. When a candidate is as old as he is, either party, I'd
like to see some rigorous cognitive testing before I can gird my loins
enough to pull the lever for him.

I agree. Have you ever seen the movie "Idiotocracy?" Its great, and
makes a great passive case for using corporal punishment and cattle
prods in teaching nitwits to listen only, lest the future be theirs.
Sometimes I even take solace in the availability of the 2nd amendment
option for a surefire solution should their numbers outstrip the
carrying capacity of the country, perhaps even re-calling the Abraham
Lincoln Brigade for domestic service. :&))
