Lots of young folks (and even old folks) make profound mistakes.  It
happens and it is part of being human.

Nothing about "consorting with the enemy" automatically implies that a
death sentence is necessary or appropriate.  Lots of folks in recent
history have provided harmful information to foreign governments, and
a typical sentence is in the 10-20 year range.

I don't think he should get 30 days in the county jail, but having him
swinging from a rope is ... not really necessary or productive.
Naturally, it should be a felony conviction and naturally he should
never get a security clearance again.  But it isn't necessary that he
be swinging ...
