I would like some input on the type rod you are using for drop shotting.

Tia,

Jack.

I am using a six foot spinning rod with a light tip but some backbone. It is
an old rod not special made for drop shot. I fish it fairly shallow on the
stained lakes here in middle Georgia and am using 8 pound PLine.

Ronnie, where do you buy PLine? I noticed it's not at BPS.

Ron, check for earlier posting of mine, wanting opinions of P-Line, and give me
some input. I just switched over to 6# to replace Stren Sensor, and I haven't got
it wet yet, but I like it when I cast in the back yard.

I usually use a fairly long (6' 8") medium action graphite spinning rod.

I bought a six feet TD spinning rod special made for drop shot and used it with Toray fruolocarbone line 4 lb, but I lately found a six feet TD bait rod I have been
using so far is no problem for drop shot rig on Spider Fusion 12/24 line. The key point on drop shot I realized is using 3 to 4 inch straight worm, not rod and reel
:)

PS.

Warren, Dose it mean P-line is Poor Line? Is Windows XP eXtra Poor?

Big Bass ! I use 6# on my tube and worm rod, and I use 8# on my crankbait and
Spinnerbait rods. I've got 30# Fireline on my "flippin" stick. I've brought in
a few 3 to 6 pounders with each of these.

Jerry, 8# line for spinnerbaits is entirely too light (no wonder you lost
that Green Goddess!) In fact, I would think that except for some finesse
situations only your "flippin" stick is properly spooled for any kind of
bass fishing. I cannot think of any situation where spinnerbaits should be
fished with less than 12# or 14# test line minimum because that is largely a
reaction bite. I think you should rethink your entire line selection
approach!

With the exception of fireline, I have never used above 8# line for bass. I
have always thought you baitcasting types were ludicrous for your
clothesline diameters! I just never said so cuz I didn't want to offend. I
very often use an ultralight for bass when I know I am unlikely to get a
fish over 2lbs and I use 2lb test line on it. My medium action rods all
have 6 or 8# line. I have never had a fish break my line, not ever(well,
not recently). I have had a couple knots slip (not break), but never a line
break due to the fish fighting to hard, that is what drag is for. Once
while fishing with 6 lb line I tied into a 20+ lb carp that fought like
nothing else. He fought so hard that my rod and reel (Wal-Mart special)
never felt the same again. The line didn't break though.

I also use 8# line for steelhead and salmon when they run the rivers. I
just don't think heavier line would be much fun. I guess that is why
baitcasters have never appealed to me.

Bob, I have to agree with Dave below as far as line weight. I thoroughly enjoy
fishing with 8# for my cranks and spinners. I think the reason that I lost the
Green Goddess is because I didn't take the time to retie, which I knew that I
should have, but I was catching them too fast. This P-line is some very tough
stuff and sensitive as the Stren Sensor.

You gotta get up with the times. We don't use large diameter lines,
we use 12, 14 or 17 pound test line with small diameters.

Ok Bob and Steve, here is the 6 million dollar question: Why?

My drag is set so that I can catch a fish many times the weight of my line
test without the line breaking. The waters I fish do not, as a rule, have
snags so bad that the fish wrap around things and break me off. I enjoy the
battle too much to use line so heavy that I can speed reel the fish in. I
can't recall a fish ever snapping my line, although I can recall losing some
fish during a long fight that I probably would have caught had I gotten them
in faster. Thing is, I don't mind. If I do get the fish landed, more often
than not I am going to release it so the occasional fish getting off isn't a
concern to me.

So, why do I need to rethink my line selection if I am happy with the
results of the line that I use? Now, Bob, you are the one that a couple
years ago told me the rod and reels I was using were limiting me without my
realizing it. Since that time I have bought some high end baser Shops rods
and reels as well as St Croix rods and Shimano reels. You were right that
the Wally world gear I was using was limiting me. So I look forward to
hearing why I need to rethink my line choice.

Mr. Bob,
Why should I go with 12-14 lb test when bass fishing? Up here in the NE
where the growning season is a lot shorter, we don't usually get fish over
5-6lbs. I have a lot more success fishing with the lighter line and never
have I had a fish break off. Now, of course if I'm fishing heavy cover like
pads, scum or nuts, I usually use fireline. BTW, all of my spinners have 8#
BUT I also have the extra spool strung with fireline.

You are right !! Thats what fishing is all about!!!!(The Fight) That is
the Sport of it !
I had an awful time getting used to fishing with the heavier rods &
lines here in Florida. To me it felt like i was using a 8 ft. 2x4
with a rope for a line.:-) I can see now where they need that down here
for Bass fishing, with all the vegetation in these lakes & canals here
but like i said before in another thread i believe (other then
Tournament fishing) that a LOT of people use way to heavy equipment for
the 3 to 5 lb. bass they are catching.FWIW!! O BTW!! Greg MacLean made
a believer out of most of the so called pros by winning the B.A.S.S.
Eastern Division Invitational in Jan. 11-13 on Lake Okeechobee,FL. using
crankbaits on 8# test line. 44 lbs 4 oz. One was a 9lb 4oz beauty!!

I don't know about yours, but 3/4 of the fish I catch on a drop shot rig
(which is a lot of fish, because I use the technique a lot) are caught on a
Lake Police Dart. I like it better than the Cross Tail Shad, although I
catch some on that, too. My best color is kind of a smoke and purple pearl
deal.

Dave, I have to quote Richard from Delaware, because he makes my point
exactly:

"You gotta get up with the times. We don't use large diameter lines,
we use 12, 14 or 17 pound test line with small diameters."

In "empty" (relatively snag-free) water as you often find in the north, you
have to remember that bass, both LM and SM, still often hold close to cover,
and if you are underlined you cannot fish as close to, or in, that cover as
I can. Advantage goes to me. I will be using 14# flourescent green Fireline
(I am a line watcher) with a ten foot leader that is usually in that case
16# Tectan monofilament. My combination will cast just as well as your 8#
whatever mono, my leader is about .011 diameter which is probably as fine
and stealthy as yours, and my rig is far stronger and more durable. I
believe that I will lose less fish and lures, and IMO I will sacrifice
nothing to do so except the need to retie as frequently or change lines as
often.

There are 14# mono's out there the size of rope that would hold the Queen
Mary. I like to think that I outgrew that kind of stuff decades ago.

Respectfully,
Bob

Ok on Darts. I forgot to mention it. Yes, it is very good. I like Ayu color.

My secret one is Tsunekichi worm 3 inch or 4 inch in watermelon seed :) Tsunekichi means always luck in Japanese.
