Weekend tourney's

try and keep our lead in the angler of the year race. Sorry to say, we
blanked. Along with lots of other teams. 30-40 mph winds with the
accompanying 4-5' rollers over the entire lake. This lake had water clarity
ranging from 6" of visability to 8' or more depending on the area you were
in. 2 limits weighed for 25 teams and 12# won it. Horrible day. Particularly
on a lake that can turn out 30# limits regularly. Now let us never speak of
it again.
Sunday found us 2 hours NW to Lake Cachuma. Had heard the lake was wide
open, primarily on topwater and blades. Me and blades are like biscuits and
gravy. Was raring to go. Had one down side in that the daytime care for my 6
yr old son who is diabetic fell through so he came with us on the boat all
day. He was a trooper and really behaved himself. Very tough particularly
since the tournament director said we would be DQ'd if they even saw a rod
in his hands.
Get on the water with heavy cloud cover and immediately noticed the water
clarity was super clear. I could see the bottom in low light at 18'. I hate
clear water. Anyway, we spent the better part of the morning throwing
topwater and blades, cruising the banks looking for a late spawner. Got one
blade fish late in the morning off the grass. Saw a number of other fish
cruising by they were not in an eating mood. We then moved up lake to find
water with more color in it.
Went out to outside breaks and started downshotting to catch fish. 2#
average size. Depth ranged anywhere from 10-20'. Wind came up again in the
afternoon (thank God) and we were able to get on a reaction bite shallow in
mud lines with traps and tora tubes. We got 15.5# for 5 fish, and 11th
place. 19# won it. Most everyone was on the same size fish though a lot of
angler's again had trouble getting on the fish. Back to that lake in 2 weeks
for another go-round.

Seriously, I love a bait that everyone but the bass thinks is too big and
outlandish.
Long as a Long A, Diameter of a Super Spook. Those don't catch fish either
by the way. LOL.

Bassmaster, Ishama Monroe if I remember correctly. That thing looks

Kota Kiryama is a good friend of mine. He lived in NY and NJ for quite a
while when he was the American arm of Lucky Craft. He moved to CA and
started fishing the Western Division (he lives back out here now, but has
continued to fish the western division (until now anyway) because it was
easier to qualify for the Classic from the division with the fewest
competitors) but I digress. When he moved to SoCal, he joined a club
(always has to be a member of a local club in addition to fishing the pro
tour) and fished club tourneys on the reservoirs. He would often throw the
big AC plug all day long in those club tourneys. Actually, he would drop it
in the water, electric away with the reel in free spool, then retreive it.
It's too heavy to actually cast. But his reasoning was simple. "All I need
to do is get bit twice, and I win!" And he did, too. A lot.

Just out of curiosity, I'm a flyfisherman and don't really care one way
or the other about tournament fishing, but isn't that dangerously close
to trolling ?

I'm totally ignorant about the rules of tournament fishing, but
on the continuum between casting and trolling, the method you
described sounds closer to trolling. Just an observation, not
meant as criticism or commentary. Like I said, I ain't got a
dog in this fight. ;-)

Seriously, the first time I threw these baits I nailed a 8#'r in the first
ten minutes of fishing it. Of course I threw it the rest of the day until my
arm fell off with no more results. There is a downside here I feel.
There are actually several methods of fishing the "big wood" as we refer to
it. AC plug is just one of several models out. I don't use the AC version
myself. If you knew the "inventor" you'ld know why.
The standard method is to cast and retrieve. Takes stout tackle, a weak mind
and a tendancy towards self abuse. The method Rich relays is also do-able.
However, it disturbs the area too much in my opinion and is also much less
efficient and makes it difficult to make a lot of presentations. Trolling is
also used frequently. (Not by tournament competators) Very effective as
well. That is all one yoyo did, who "guarenteed" the world record was going
to fall on his lure. You all remember when the overall world record fell
right??????
