Which hard lures should a beginner have in his box ?

I have posted a few times to ROFB and thoroughly enjoyed it - I hope you
guys dont mind another of these questions.
I would like to know your *personal* opinion on what 10 hard lures a
*beginner* should have in his tackle box.
I am a beginner and have the following :
Dying Flutter
Tiny Torpedo
Shad Rap
Fat Rap
Crazy Crawler
Rapala Minnow
Broken Back
Rebel Pop R (Small)
Hula Popper
Zara Puppy
Zara Spook

It depends on what waters you fish, deep, shallow, rocky,weedy, all
the above....<grin>
I like having Rapala floaters to float and then jerk back to the boat.
The rainbow trout color has been working for me. I have a few Bagley
shallow runners (I fish shallow ponds in little Delaware) and a new
Storm Sub Wart. I also throw 5A and 6A Bombers. I like top waters:
Pop-r, Zara Spook, Spit'n Image, a double prop coach dog lure from
B.A.S.S. I have had success on. Rattle traps. I guess I don't have

Hey Tim, I'm curious, what rods and reals are you using?
As for your collection of hard baits I'd say the only thing you're missing
if you're a topwater fan is a jitterbug, otherwise that's really not a bad
collection to start out with.

other hard baits combined. Maybe it's because it's so easy to use ( throw
it out & crank it back, sometimes with short pauses) <grin>. Favorite top
water is Pop-R & Zara Spook. In heavy cover & pads I like the in-line buzz
baits (Unckle Bucks). Also use white/chartuse 3/8 oz spinnerbaits, 5A & 6A
Bombers (baby bass color this time of year). Shad Rap pretty good too. For
heavy grass, the old Johnson Silver Minnow with trailer still works pretty
good. Didn't make ten either :-)

Although I have quite a number of crankbaits, I catch most of my fish on
jigs and tubes.

easy to cast and catch fish on, and are just about snag-proof. You
have a lot of treble hooks in your list, and I'll bet you're
protective of those lures (a little hesitant to throw them in the
grass, wood, etc.?). With a spinnerbait, you can throw it into the
mess where bass like to hang out, and pull it right through.
You might also consider one bag of 4-5" (fake plastic) worms, and a
bag of worm hooks (2/0 - 3/0), and some smallish bullet sinkers.
Notice I said ONE bag of worms (natural colors if the water's clear,
unnaturally bright colors (chartreuse, etc.) or dark (black) if the
water's stained). Learn how to rig them Texas style
(http://www.insideline.net/video/PegSinker.ram), and DON'T buy another
bag until you've used every last worm. Otherwise, you'll accumulate a
bucketfull of soft plastics in a few months. ;-)
Oops, I just saw that you were asking for hard lures... Oh well, the
spinnerbait fits that description.

1. Deep Diver - Strike King's Pro-Model 5 (10-12') & 6 (14-16') in Green
Back/Chartreuse Belly, Tennessee Shad, and Crawfish colors for use in
warm/hot water. Excalibur Fat Free Shad - Model 6 (10-14') & 7 (14-18') in
Golden Shad, Tennessee Shad, Crawly Bottom colors that I use after a cold
front or in cool water (42°-65°). The Strike King will produce a nice
wobble where the Excalibur Fat Free Shad produces a nice wiggle. There are
other brand names that will do the same thing. The fatter the body the more
the lure wants to wobble (rolling like wiggle), the thinner the body the
tighter the wiggle (side to side action). The closer the tie is to the body
the tighter the action, where the lower the tie is on the diving bill the
wider the action. So if you got a flat thin lure with the tie close to the
body it would have a real tight wiggle (excellent in cold or gin clear
water), where if you had a fat body lure with the tie close to the body it
would produce a tighter wobble. Thus if you had a flat body diver with the
tie mid-way down the diving bill it would produce a wider wiggle, and if you
had a fat body diver with the tie mid-way down the diving bill it would
produce a very wide rolling wobble.

The worlds biggest 6 fish bag of over 50lb 6oz was taken in Albert Falls by
Cliffy Swift recently.
I'd say on average our fish are probably about 1/2lb - 1lb less than in
America. A large part of this is due to the fact that we don't have big fish
breeding programs since they are not indiginous and in the eastern Cape the
Nature conservation authorities have targetted smallmouth bass as "Public
Enemy" due to the fact that they tend to munch down on certain species
enemic to the region (Numerous yellowfish and barbs.)

I am new to Bassing so I am open to correction.
Where I live 1.5 kg and above is a nice bass and 2.5 kg + is very nice !
I have posted a pic of my girlfriend with a bass she caught recently to
alt.binaries.pictures.fishing . I named it SA Bass.
This is a nice bass for this dam (due to overstocking I think ) but is
well below average for the better dams in our area.
I have also posted a pic of one I caught at the same dam which is larger
than the previous bass but the picture doesn't do it justice. :) really
!!!

My worm rod is a Shimano Catana 6,6' medium heavy with a
Daiwa Procaster z - 153iV baitcaster.
My second worm rod is a Shimano Crestfire 6,6' medium heavy with a

This is if my girlfriend isn't using it !!!! She fishes with me and a while
ago she said that she wanted to try a baitcaster. I reluctantly let her
use it as I thought that my girl and a baitcaster were a recipe for
frustration and would ultimately lead to the demise of our fishing
partnership,
however she has adapted well to the baitcaster.
My finesse rod is a Jarvis Walker Vector composite 6' light action with a
Shimano
FX 2000 RA spinning reel.
This rod deserves a special mention as it cost about R60 !!! when I got it
(about R75 now)
and is a graphite composite which is both light and strong ( it has taken
much more punishment
than a much more expensive Shimano Bullwhip that I broke) I think that it is
a great light spinning rod for its price.
I have only been bassing for a few months now so these rods are actually my
spinning rods that I have pressed into
service. When I am more up to speed I will consider buying a dedicated bass
rod/rods but so far these have given me
great service.

The large mouth Bass in Southern Africa were originally all the equivalent
of the Northern American strain and typically did not grow much beyond 6lbs.
However the Florida strain of large mouth was introduced into Zimbabwe (next
door to South Africa) in 1981 and since then the sizes have escalated
rapidly. The current Zimbabwean record is 16.05lbs...

certainly some must find there way there via the river system since most
highveld farmers stock Bass in their farm dams. However, they are certainly
not being caught yet, at least not that I am aware of, but surely that is
just a matter of time. Given the relatively high water temp in Kariba it
should be able to grow real monsters ;-)
