Wrong. There is no "preferred" reel type for bass fishing. Use tackle
that you're comfortable using.

The sad facts are that there are no $100 or less casting reels out there
that can stand up to the rigors of serious bass fishing. I always tell
people to spend the bucks on their reels, it pays dividends in the long
run.

If you're only buying one rig, I'd recommend a high-speed 6:1+ reel.
Makes a day on the water alot more enjoyable.
Spend the bucks on a good casting reel. I use TD-X's because they're
the best. I'm on my 3rd year of maintainance-free performance from 2 of
mine.

more use and abuse than any Shimano or Diawa that I ever owned. Even the
old no ball bearing 5000 is very popular with some, because it lasts.
Ambassadors are not often a favorite for a person with small hands. It is
also my personal opinion that they require just a bit better trained thumb
and that may be why some folks do not like them.

I've gotten some very good service life using Shimano Coriolis baitcasting
reels. They get used quite a lot, over 150 days a year and other than
routine cleaning and lubrication, no failures. These are a low profile reel
and many people prefer this style of reel. If you don't find this
comfortable, take a look at the Ambassaduer 5500 round style reel. They are
a very basic reel that takes a ton of abuse. I've used mine for bassin and
catching muskies. Throwing heavy muskie lures and catching even heavier
fish is tough on a reel. The 5500's that I have have lasted over 10 years.
That's pretty good service for a reel under $100 in my book.

to the bass pro shop online and they have tons. I am looking to spend
around 100 bucks or less and would appreciate some recommendations for

fine reels for less than $100, ie 4600C3, 4600C4 , UC4600C,RXT3600C and
REXP1.And I am sure the new Abu Garcia EON will prove to be a very
durable reel.

I have had 5 Shimano Citicas for over 4 years that have had no maintanance
and have performed flawlessly. Granted, they are not the first reel I'd pick up,
but for the average fisherman, they will last and suggested retail is $99.99. I
would, however, spend and extra $40 and get the Curado. It is a much better reel.

using a bait caster. It is made by Shakespeare (SP) and has held up pretty
well considering the abuse I usually issue to my toyz!
I will probably get bent over & buy a nice one now that I spent my time on
the learning curve with the inexpensive setup...

Could those Chronarch's have been 5 or 6 years ago?? I had those reels too
and they did wear out rather quickly. The newer Chronarch's have proven to be
near bullet proof, but I imagine that their are exceptions. The new Chronarch MG
is really sweet as is the Calcutta 200 TE..
Nothing wrong with 'jumping of the bandwagon', but remember to keep an open
mind. I take time during every consumer/dealer show to look at the offerings
from all the manufacturers......you never know what you may learn.
My whole point to my original post is that I'm sure that EVERY manufacturer
offers a quality reel that the AVERAGE fisherman would find more than exceptable
for less than $100. I definitely don't want this to turn into a 'my reels are
better than your reels' debate.

I've used Calcutta's, Chronarchs, Curado's and a few other Shimano's....
I've used Penn, Daiwa, and the list goes on and on.
I totally prefer my Curado and my Rick Clunn Bass Pro Shops
reels............ What's even nicer is that the Johnny Morris one is on
sale online for $99 .... They were originally selling that reel for $169 ! !
! ! ! ! ! ! That's a bargain.
Of all of the reels, the Curado is probably the smoothest one, but the
Clunn's are a close second. Also, at $79 online.....they are a heck of a
deal also!

You are right about the average comment. Most of us that fish 100+ days a year
will get the better equipment. I would have to state that "I" feel the best bang
for the buck is the Curado. Most Redman/Everstart guys I know would agree. The
Curado has 5 bearings, aluminum frame, super stopper II, vbs and comes in left
or right hand retrieve with your choice of either a 5:1 or 6.2:1 retrieve.
Retail is $139.99. Also, there is a smaller size for 2001. That's a total of 5
choices from the same reel.

I have purchased all kinds (BTW I do really like the Curado and Calcutta
reels) but feel that others have the smoothness and quality. The jury is
still out, but I've had my 2 Clunn's for about 4 and 6 months now and they
are holding up very well...... I do only fish about 2 days per week with
them though.
Here's a question of importance to me lately...... anyone used those
Japanese versions of the Shimano baitcasters???? I'm thinking of buying
one.

reel designed to cast very light weight lures and does this task very well
indeed, the 1500 series is more Curado sized and offers easy outside braking
control. Both Japanese versions are very high quality reels much better than
U.S. models sold to us dirty americans.

good way to avoid making at least a few mistakes. The Shimano Curado is
kinda like a bass fishing standard, so many other reels manufacturer's try
to copy it and some do a good job....others just plain suck. However I feel
that the Curado is starting to get a little high priced at around $125.00 to
$140.00 each plus tax. The Curado features centrifigal brakes that must be
adjusted by opening up the side plate and choosing the correct braking
control to reduce backlashes. It is a smooth casting and retrieving reel and
has a fairly reliable drag system and should last you at least 3 years of
hard fishing as long as cleaned and oiled proper. By hard fishing, I mean
about 10 hours a day casting at least 1000 casts a day. You would be well
advised to at least look at a Curado for features. Now there are just a few
other reels I will mention here that are less money and offer just as good
and in some cases better preformance than the Curado. The BPS Johny Morris
Signature series baitcaster is on sale for $99.00. This reel is a steal at
this price and in my humble opinion is a better preforming reel than the
Curado and maybe even the Chronarch. It also features a redesigned flipping
switch that will not break. Next is the Rick Clunn reel also at BPS at I
think around $69.00 also a great price for this Tuff as nails reel that also
serves as one of my flipping and pitching reels, it is a very good reel but
a little harder to maintain because of the reels engineering. The Pflueger
Summit is another good reel for 69 bucks but the drag needs tender loving
care. It also has a flipping switch that works great and will not break.
Alot of Pro's are using this reel that are trying to save a few dollars...
To fix any drag problems they are ordering a 0.74 cent drag washer meant to
fit the Shimano Calcutta 200 and install it in the Summit, Now they have a
bullet proof inexpensive reel that preforms great. One last reel that
deserves a good mention, but has a not so good reputation for lasting very
long is the Quantum. Quantum/Zebco is going through hard times but it looks
like they are being bought out by Shimano. The only baitcasting reel that is
worth a damn they no longer make but is still available at BPS and some
other outlets, is the E600 TI. Do not buy the lesser versions of this reel,
they are garbage and will cause you nothing but trouble. However the E600Ti
features 6 bearings, smooth operation, reliable drag and the guts to last
without breaking down like the lesser 500 and 400 series of this reel. The
E600Ti has some critical inside components that are Titanium coated and
better fit of parts. I have noticed that these reels can be had brand new
for $60.00 in the last flyer recieved from BPS and found the same deal on
some internet sites. This is another steal for a real that will definetly be
as good as the Curado. Oh one more thing about the E600Ti, it has outside
adjustable magnetic braking making it easier to change different weight
lures with ease if you only have one reel to do it all. At sixty bucks each
you could buy two reels and two good rods and gain some shopping pionts as
well.

they ever hold up to the rigors of Alaska fishing and the salt water as well
The funky bass fisherman who claim to fish alot all year never put a strain on
their reels. As they are to busy firing up those over powered delicious bass
