Centipede a.k.a. French Fry

I was anticipating the tubebait bite dying out so I bought a ton of french
fries (centipedes) in every color in the spectrum. Now that I have them, I
guess I should put them to good use, so what is your most productive method
of using them and where? Texas Rigged, Split Shot Rig, Carolina Rigged,
Weightless, Yankee Rig/Drop Rig, Fat side or thin side, weedbeds, stumps,
docks, deep water humps, line size, hook size, etc.

I would also like to hear about this bait, in all of my trips I have never used
or have never seen anyone use one of these baits, they dont even sell them out
here. If I could find some ways to use them, I might have a secret bait.

I am by no means an expert on the art of fishing French fries (FF). I used
to only fish the French fries on Carolina rigs. I have always done best
with them on points or shallow brush piles. For me they work best where
there are Kentucky bass.

I have a neat trick I do to them that actually seems to improve the number
of hits I get on them. I mark 3 or 4 narrow stripes around the FF with a
Fluorescent Chartreuse marking pen. I put one of the marks very close to
the end that the hook is inserted into, then one or two stripes (separated
by about the width of the marker) around the area where the hook point will
be, and one stripe about 2/3 way toward the unhooked end. I keep the marks
in the hook area, as the bass seem to pick up on it better that way. I only
make the marks about one ridge wide if the FF is one of those with the
ridges.

I prefer the greenish or brownish colors, and I like to use Camo.

In the last two years, I have found that fishing a FF on a Texas rig in
thick cover works very well. I guess they don't see them in there as often.
I have also found myself fishing them on a 1/16 to 1/18 lead head jig.
These I fish in areas of chunk rock, sandy bottom or on creek drops or
ledges. But, I put the stripes on them all just the same.

success with a french-fry around the Charity Islands on Saginaw. I was using a
smoke/blue flake on a gammie jighead. I've also had good success on the Ohio

I have had my best results fishing them
on rocky points that taper fast into deep water.I peg a 1/8th bullet weight
about 18"
above the hook.I use a #2 Gamakatsu extra wide gap or G-lock hook.Then I rig
the pede
wacky.I fish this rig in tough conditions also in clear water.I fish it on
spinning rod with 12 pound test.You are usually safe with this line since your
in open water mostly.This has been very productive for me when its hard to buy
a bite.Oh my favorite color is watermelonseed Zoom,another good bait along the
same idea the "Zoom Fish Doctor"

I have had tremendous results fishing french fries wacky rigged. I use zoom
fries, color is no big deal.
In open water, just take a wide gap hook, fold the fry in half, and bring
the point of the hook through the middle of the fry. If you are fishing in
cover, here's a trick. Take your hook point through the top of the fry
first, and bring it under the bait so the hook is "u" shaped under the fry.
Bring the hook point up into the bait, and now you have a weedless wacky
rig. Set the hook hard. And be patient.

selected the June 2000 Bassmaster ragazine and ran across a good
article entitled 'How To Fish Centipedes'. It covers all your
inquires. It was talking about how the 'pede's appearance did not
really fit the looks of the usual 'pretty' baits, the writer said "It
is about as sexy as Roland Martin in a miniskirt." If you can't get
