I've been out of the camping scene for a while. We just
bought some acreage in upstate NY and we're going to put an
RV of some kind on it for a few years to save up a little
and then put a log home or something like that on. Next year
we'll have a well, septic, and electric put in.

Anyhow, we're currently looking at a 2002 34' Holiday
Rambler Alumascape travel trailer. Two slides. The unit
appears to be in excellent condition. Holiday used to be a
very good brand but I don't know anymore.

The salesman said that it's unclosed and heated underneath
and also has "better" insulation, in the walls and floors,
which would be very good as a few friends and I will be
using it in deer season which can get quite cold. I'm not
thinking of using the black water tank, we'll make other
arraignments for that this year but I was thinking of using
the holding tank for cooking, dishes, a couple of showers,
etc and just leaving the valve open and draining it into a
drywell. Obviously we'd leave the heat on all the while
until the end of the season and then drain all lines, etc.

Anyhow, they want $19K for the unit which you can look at
here if you'd like:

Any opinions on it's intended use and/or price would be
appreciated.

I would look at a older mobile home for your purposes. Probably a lot
cheaper, even with moving costs. Look at mobile home parks. They try to
move out the older trailers, some even buy them up to get them out.

You might want to check local regs on just letting the grey water
drain. Some counties and / or townships way out in the boonies have
some surprizing rules on used water drainage.

Often taunted by trout. Almost entirely harmless. Really.

Thanks for both replies.

Mobile homes are expressly forbidden in the deed. Travel
trailers are ok on a "temporary" basis until you can build.

I checked the codes (basically there aren't any). I usually
wouldn't even consider it but it's going to be a minimal
amount of relatively clean water.

Actually, given replies that I've received from a different
group I'm more worried about using slide outs in the cold
weather.

More research to do before I "jump" I guess.

Thanks

Steve,

You might also look at Spartan travel trailers which were mostly
manufactured in the 50's. They are built better than Airstreams and much
much better than anything built since the 60's. For 20K you can buy a very
nice one. If you have any interest in this idea at all you can contact me
through my website. I don't have any for sale but would glad to help you
find one. Vintage travel trailers are increasing in popularity and value. It
will not drop in value like the 2002 Rambler. Most restored Spartans have
modern convienences added. Here is a link to a restored Spartan. It is not
available but will give you an idea of what they are like. J. Paul Getty
owned Spartan Aircraft company which also produced the Spartan travel
trailers. They are avasilable up to 50' in length.
