Hello,

I am looking for costume ideas (both formal and informal wear) for a
female Byzantine persona (somewhere between 1100 and 1400). Can anyone
recommend books which might of help, or just describe such garb to me?
I've already searched through our university library without much luck.
I'd really appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!

Here are a few books you might find:

Ancient Greek, Roman, and Byzantine Costume/Decoration
by Mary G. Houston

Art of the Byzantine Era by David Talbot Rice

Costume Pattern and Design by Max Tilke

Cut My Cote by Dorothy K. Burnham

Everyday life in Byzantium by Tamara Talbot Rice

A History of Private Life V. 1 by Paul Veyne, Editor

The Mysterious Fayum Potraits by Euphrosyne Doxiadis

Also, there is one book written by a Scadian that puts it all together:::

Fashion at the Center of the World by Mistress Veleda of Isenfir
Moongate Designs; 33791 Windmill Drive, Canton, MI 48187

As you can see, Byzantine is one of the times I do...some of these might
be in your libraries reference section, especially Tilke's...I can send
you more specific info if needed

At 3YC there was a Byz. Costuming discussion group. One of the
particpants (sorry, I don't have the name right here) gave me a handout to
copy for people. It includes much of _Costuming at the Center of the
World_. Many forgot to connect up to get their copies and I would be
happy to send one to you for the cost of the copy and mailing, the copy
was about $3.

Anybody who reads this that was supposed to get a copy, please feel free
to contact me.

By the by, one truism of Byz costuming is that if it doesn't move, cover
it with pearls. If it moves, stop it and cover it with pearls. I have
found incredible buys on pearls at gem and mineral shows, eg Gem Faire
which tours on a regular basis. I got a particularly good deal one year
when I hit the last fair of the season.

Darca -

Try:

'Historic Costume for the Stage', Lucy Barton, W.H. Baker, Boston, 1935,
Chapter V - 'Byzantine and Romanesque 400-1200', pp. 95-124.

also, from the rialto archives at
"http://www.pbm.com/~lindahl/rialto/clothing-msg.html" (see the rialto
for full citations):

"For Byzantine garb - primary sources - try any art history book and
look for pictures of the mosaics. Ravenna had a bunch, as did many of
the churches. In particular, there are good ones of Justinian and
Theodora, and a "procession of twelve female saints (virgins?)" one that
is particularly good. Then go to _Ancient Greek, Roman and Byzantine
Costume and Decoration_ for a good explanation of how all those folds
got there. Do *not* trust the Byzantine line-drawings in Doreen
Yarwood's _Encyclopedia of World Costume_ - she blows it on one of the
female saints from that mosaic by turning the drape of a chiton-like
undertunic into a cuffed sleeves. And ghod knows what else!"

"For those interested in a well-researched secondary source on Byzantine
garb, I recommend _Fashion at the Center of the World_, written by
Mistress Veleda of Isenfir (known to many as the artist responsible for
Lady Tudor Glitz & Beast). Please send e-mail if you would like her
address. "

And, in your spare time, please take a look at our catalog at
"http://www.ladydra.com".

Good luck,

Thank you for mentioning my files. I'm afraid I haven't been on the Rialto
much lately so I missed the original poster.

I also have a file more specific to this in the CLOTHING section of my
SCA Rialto Files (the Rialto archives):

cl-Bynzantine-msg (14K) 8/30/96 Clothing of Bynzantine.

This file in the CULTURES section might also be of interest:

Byzantine-msg (14K) 11/15/96 Byzantine culture, clothing, commerce.

The URL for my files is:
