I am thinking very seriously about creating a Chinese persona, but I'm
having a devil of a time finding information on the subject. If anyone
knows where I can find information on naming practices, garb, or armor (I
already fight heavies), or has that information themselves, I would be
most appreciative.

Thanks in advance.

I'll give you my standard "Librarians are your friend" lecture. :) Hie
yourself off to your local library and make an appointment to talk with one
of the Reference librarians.

Now, you don't specify a particular time period, so I'll assume that you're
still in the initial exploratory stages of research. If this is so, I
suggest that you pick up some books that give a broad overview of Chinese
history. That will give you a feel for what was going on where and when.
From there, you can chose a more specific time and place. The easiest way to
find these general books on Chinese history is to do a search in your
library's catalog using the phrase "China--History" (Note: You may not need
to use the dashes; check the local help files, or ask your librarian for
help.)

Here are some other subject headings to use:

China--Civilization
China--Civilization--960-1644
China--Civilization--1644-1912

China--Description and travel

China--History--960-1644
China--History--Sung dynasty, 960-1279
China--History--Hsi Hsia dynasty, 1038-1227
China--History--Chin dynasty, 1115-1234
China--History--Yüan dynasty, 1260-1368
China--History--Ming dynasty, 1368-1644
China--History, Military

China--Politics and government
China--Politics and government--960-1279
China--Politics and government--960-1644
China--Politics and government--1260-1368
China--Politics and government--1368-1644

China--Social life and customs

One of the best ways to get a feel for names, is to read histories. This
will clue you in on what names were used in the period you're looking at.
One thing to note though, the names *may* be altered or standardized from the
original. Without looking at primary sources (i.e. manuscripts or facsimiles
of manuscripts) you can't be totally sure.

For clothing, etc. I 've always found that art work of the time is one of the
best sources there is. Again, start general. Look at art history books, then
narrow your search and look for particular artists or time periods. Here are
more subject headings to help you with that:

Art, Chinese
Costume--China
Armor--China
Weapons--China

If your local library doesn't have any books that suit your needs, talk to
your librarian about borrowing books through Inter-Library Loan. In that
case, I would suggest searching the library catalogs of the Library of
Congress and the University of California system:

UC- telnet://melvyl.ucop.edu

Hope this helps
