Queensland has moved a step closer to securing its first legal nude
beach.
Sunshine Coast Regional Council Mayor Bob Abbot yesterday agreed to
take a proposal for a clothes-optional beach to the council for
consideration within the next six weeks.
Free Beaches Australia, the lobby group behind the nude beach push ,
had suggested three different sites, however Mr Abbot said the most
likely choice would be Noosa's Alexandra Bay
The site has been an unofficial nude beach for the last 20 years.
"It's been accepted at Alexandra Bay and Noosa Heads for the last 20
years and it is just now that groups can get in an official
application for it, which Free Beaches has done,'' Cr Abbot said.
Free Beaches Australia committee member Anita Grigg said Queenslanders
had become more accepting of nude sunbathing.
"There are a lot of rednecks in Queensland, but when we put out polls
we usually get 88 to 90 per cent of people approving a nude beach," Ms
Grigg said.
"That approval is across the board, on the basis that the beach is a
bit out of the way and there are lots of signs to show what it is used
for.''
The group stages an annual Nude Olympics at Alexandra bay that draws
about 600 people.
But that number could skyrocket with the approval of a legal beach,
according to group vice president Mark Hayter.
He said Queensland had been missing out tourism dollars due to its
stance on beach nudity.
"We get a lot of calls from people in New Zealand and other countries
asking where our legal nude beaches are and when we say we don't have
one it scares them off,'' Mr Hayter said.
Queensland is the only state or territory in Australia without a legal
nude beach.
Premier Anna Bligh has previously signalled her willingness to
consider changing state legislation as long as the local council
approved a clothes optional beach.
But Alexandra Bay, Noosa NP ( National Park ) , Noosa Queensland is
inaccessable it requires hiking and walking down a cliff.
Alexandra Bay, Noosa NP not accessable by police or ambulance
vehicles as well as being not accessable by public transport over
a 3 hour train and taxi journey from the Brisbane CBD ( Central
Business District ).
Please I respect what everyone is doing but it's putting it out of
the reach of a lot of nudists.
Also note there are no toilets, shade buildings, water , kiosks,
public telephones on the actual b each, Alexandra Bay Noosa NP.

Alexandria Bay has been used by nudists since the 1970s as an unofficial
nudist beach, and their annual carnivals attract up to 600 people. Added to
that I have also seen police vehicels down on the beach at the Alex Bay
Carnival. At last years one about two of them pulled up onto the beach and
they watched the crowd for about half an hour before heading back. There is
also a crevice in the middle of the beach where people drink water.
However, you are correct about there being no toilets, kiosks or public
telephones. Mobile phone coverage on the beach is non-existent as well.
I agree that Alexandria Bay is not for everyone, especially not for people
who aren't very fit because of the hike to the beach down the track. The
same goes with beaches like Little Digger's Beach, Cobbler's Beach and
Obelisk Beach in NSW - they are damned hard to get to!
