For years I have been an outspoken advocate of nudism & naturism....just
recently have I added this side of me to the internet...that's why you
don't know me. Well....now I've been asked to put my money where my
mouth is. A friend at college (female) has asked me to pose nude for
her art class. I hesitate for a few reasons.
1. I'm very accustomed to the body acceptance that comes with naturists,
and I'm worried how an art class is going to react to a 300lb nude?
2. I'm very accustomed to being nude with other people...when the
majority are nude, but never in a situation where I'm the only one nude.
3. What kind of message am I sending if I do? and if I don't?
4. I happen to be a rather dateless single male (39), that would be nude
in front of a class of mostly under 21, mostly female students. I'm not
sure how I feel about that.
sooooo...do I pose...or don't I? I have no moral problems with
it...more a social issue, and a psychological one.
need your input friends?
Tom Gassler aka Sequoian@Prodigy or AOL or Hotmail
They're inviting you, not somebody else. If some of the students
aren't comfortable with a large model, it's not your problem. But I
think they'll be so fascinated by a body type that differs from other
models that they'll welcome the variety and the challenge. If not,
they probably shouldn't be in art class.
:2. I'm very accustomed to being nude with other people...when the
:majority are nude, but never in a situation where I'm the only one nude.
Remember, this is *not* a social situation. This is work (as I assume
that you'll be paid a small amount for your time). You're not
expected to be mingling with the other people, so don't expect to be
on an "equal" footing with them in a social sense. Or, in another
setting, when you're stripping for a medical exam, you don't expect
the doctor to be nude, too, but as a nudist, you're probably more
comfortable than the average person in disrobing for the doctor.
:3. What kind of message am I sending if I do? and if I don't?
If you do, you're saying (as most nudists claim) that you're
comfortable in your body and willing to show it as one example of the
glorious diversity of the human form.
:4. I happen to be a rather dateless single male (39), that would be nude
:in front of a class of mostly under 21, mostly female students. I'm not
:sure how I feel about that.
See #2 above. They don't care whether you're dateless or single; it
would be as inappropriate for the subject to come up as it would
between you and your supervisor at work. And as far as you're
concerned, they're just as "off-limits" as if you were a professor at
the school, since you will be essentially a part-time staff employee.
Be professional about the situation, and the problem vanishes.
:sooooo...do I pose...or don't I? I have no moral problems with
:it...more a social issue, and a psychological one.

Go for it!

I enjoy being nude around my wife, and at an occasional Hot spring
situation where it is tolerated or practically required..
HOWEVER>>> One of the politically correct forms of Hate that is still
left is FAT-HATE...
A lot of folks (particularly young folks) think it's OK to
ridicule fat people , and to assume that they're Lazy, or undisciplined
for being fat..
You have to be careful when showering in Community Center Recreational
places,, because it is the custom for Younger gentlemen NOT to
shower nude... You can be suspect of being a "Old Fat Fag" if you're
not pretty discrete about it..
While there is nothing anti-naturist in posing for the art class, it's
also not inherently a naturist requirement. So don't feel as if saying
"no" means you in any way bring your naturism into questions.
: 1. I'm very accustomed to the body acceptance that comes with naturists,
: and I'm worried how an art class is going to react to a 300lb nude?
ya never know. you might want to ask the teacher to "prep" the class with
some kind of "it's not about stereotypical advertising images" speech
before you arrive.
: 2. I'm very accustomed to being nude with other people...when the
: majority are nude, but never in a situation where I'm the only one nude.
that's why this is not inherently a naturist setting. There is nothing
wrong with feeling uncomfortable, nor with feeling comfortable.
: 3. What kind of message am I sending if I do? and if I don't?
I will pose for a class / I won't pose for a class.
You may also send messages about body acceptance, etc.
However, you will not be saying anything about your naturism either way.
: 4. I happen to be a rather dateless single male (39), that would be nude
: in front of a class of mostly under 21, mostly female students. I'm not
: sure how I feel about that.
Are you afraid you'll be embarassed, or afraid you like the idea a little
too much?

My understanding of how nude-model art classes go is that the students
are generally much more uncomfortable than the model. And if it's a
class of serious art students (or serious wannabes), they will probably
be ultra respectful and serious about the whole thing (e.g.would not
joke about your nudity). Models have a robe to wear when they are not
in their pose, so it won't feel quite so odd to be the only one nude.

You're a little smaller than I am. You won't have a problem.

The same one you gave on your first trip to a nudist venue. None.

Well, I married one of those young ones. No pain, yet (but tired a lot <G>).

Try it - you won't have a problem - and you'll occasionally get (if you
ask for them) copies of the drawings/paintings, when they've been graded.

I say DO IT if you feel you'd enjoy doing it. With my personality,
I'd do it just to see how various artists would 'translate' me onto
canvas. Would I become a Buddha? A satirical Pan, pipes and all?
Jabba the Hut? A cherub? A cubist checkerboard? A surreal
landscape?
I don't think I'd do it if it were simply practice painting a replica
of myself (not interesting enough for me). But other than that, I'd
think of it as an exciting opportunity and lots of fun.

I thought it is not liked to advertise?
Have you financial interests in both clubs?
Do you side and attack anyone as long as you can "cash the check"?
Are you trying to post a promotion to your interests skillfully hidden into
a "normal" reply?

Sorry for the little diatribe about myself. I'm not trying to be egotistical, I
just figure anyone who cares to know a small amount about me should be told,
since this is the first I am being heard of. Besides, if everyone did this
openly and honestly, we wouldn't have trouble with obnoxious people. Oh well, I
guess I'll just only read RNEO...
So, after all that, I just want to say that, being a bit of an artist myself,
there is really NO reason whatsoever for you to feel nervous, Thomas. A class
that would like to paint/draw you is really going to be no more judgemental
than a fellow nudist would, though for other reasons. They should really just
be genuinly interested in the human form in all its varieties. You can have the
satisfaction of knowing you are being considered as an aesthetic form, and that
you are being rendered as Art. Also, since you already consider your body
nothing to be ashamed of, posing would simply be an act of generosity on your
part (even though you would [hopefully] be paid), and it feels good to be
generous about doing something, especially for a friend. Besides, your friend
may gain new respect for your naturist views, though I'm sure she already does
have respect for them, and still would even if you do decide not to pose. I
really think you should go for it.
Sorry so long. I'll try to be far briefer in future postings.

I don't see that as a problem. Body acceptance is not restricted to
naturists, and it's a study the students are painting what they see.
I think it's quite a measure of confidence, and a compliment for you
[or anyone else] to be asked to pose. Further, its great that there's
a shift away from 'madison avenue' types of models.
>2. I'm very accustomed to being nude with other people...when the

No difference, actually. It remains a non-sexual situation.
>3. What kind of message am I sending if I do? and if I don't?
If you do; you will be helping others towards acceptance of their own,
and others bodies.
If you don't then, IMO, I think, it indicates a lack of
self-acceptance and a re-inforcement of the stereotypes that only
'madison avenue' types should pose.

Understandable...new situation. However, have confidence in yourself
and your friend.

I would encourage you to pose.

You got my two cents worth...:)
Hope it was of assistance.

Genuine art classes seek models of both sexes and all kinds of body
shapes and sizes. After all, the object of the exercise is to extend the
students' drawing and painting skills.
Of course, you need a lot of self-discipline and it isn't for all:
you've got to stay still and content yourself with your own thoughts for
what must seem like ages, often in uncomfortable positions and perhaps
cold and draughty conditions. (I've observed it from the point of view
of the student.)
But if that suits you, go for it!

Maybe I'm reading between the lines here, but I think I know what you were
thinking . And the answer is the same as at a nude beach. DONT WORRY ABOUT
IT.
I once posed nude for a mixed group of painters and before the session, I
approached the instructor and asked her what i should do if I got an errection
during the class.
Her answer was simple.
She said:" Keep your hands away from it so they can paint it."
Hope this helps.

I'd like to offer, but most would take it, or me the wrong way.
How does one approach a subject such as this?

go to the local colleges and find the art department. Look on the bulletin
boards to see if they are advertising for models. If so, go see that
instructor and tell them you are interested. If no ads, go see the
drawing/painting instructors and ask if any of their classes use life models.
If so tell the instructor you are interested and let them tell you what they
need.
local galleries that have classes also advertize for models.
