Hmm. I do like Phil Hale. We have a series of limited edition prints of
his in the living room. I don't know if he's my favorite, but I do like.
(I could only find online one of his pieces, here:
http://www.stephen-king.net/books/insomnia.html) I also like Aubrey
Beardsley
(http://landow.stg.brown.edu/victorian/decadence/ab/beardsleyov.html) and
William Hogarth, and I've always enjoyed the Preraphaelite artists. And I
like the work of Tony DiTerlizzi (http://diterlizzi.com/index.shtml)
> --Favorite artistic movement(s)?
Well, as a whole, I'll go with Preraphaelite. Next to would be
illustration--modern fantasy.
> --Favorite work(s) of art overall?
Dante Gabriel Rossetti's "Ecce Ancilla Domini!" perhaps. Mary looks so
thrilled. (http://sunsite.auc.dk/cgfa/rossetti/p-8domini.htm)
> --Favorite painting(s)?
As above.
> --Favorite sculpture(s)?
Three dimensional art isn't really my thing. Steve minored in sculpture,
but it never moved me that much. We have a statue we call Batbutt in our
bathroom that I kind of like. Cast metal, made out of a baby doll and a
piece from a batman cake decoration kit.
> --Favorite art museum? (assuming you've been to some)
I find them intensely tedious. This may have to do with my inability to
take them at my own pace, since Steve will stop and do studies of them as he
goes. Given that, I like the National Gallery, since I can escape to other
places while he's drawing hands.

Steve is--quite.

Rodin's Gates of Hell are pretty damn impressive.
There's also something about Michaelangelo's prisoners

some talent). Or this fountain in Berlin. or a million
others that slip my mind at the moment.

a weird thing about sunsets. a "good one" is so gaudy that a
decent painting of it would actually look kitsch and crap.
He did manage to master the trick of light coming from the sky,
but then again he did have enough goes at it..
It's a bit like some plastic flowers. I always wondered why
anyone would make them so fake looking, but having seen tropical
flowers like ginger etc., I reckon it's actually because they're
quite realistic, but just "transplanted" from places where
they look natural, to places where they are totally crap. But
then, why would anyone ever want one anyway? Capturing an instant
and eternal image loses the transience (of flowers or sunsets)
and completely voids the exercise. Dunno, never mind.

I particularly like 'installations' or abstract art. Some video work I

and had to be led away, blubbering - much to the amusement of other
gallery visitors.

Dunno. I was told that for something to be Art it had to be done by
an Artist. I accepted this for a few years, before my next question
arose ...."What is an Artist ?". Guess the mind likes to upset you

May I add a further question ?
What art/artist do you dislike - and why ?

The only one I've been to is the Everson here in Syracuse. It's very nice and

>--Favorite medium? (painting, photography, 3-D, etc.)
I like painting and photography. With both you capture what is really there
but in two different ways and in a multitude of expressions (if that makes any
sense). What I think I'm trying to say is that with a photograph you capture
what is actually there - the light, the dark, the shadows, etc. With a
painting, you capture all of that but you can take one aspect and make it the
central theme of the piece. But now that I've said that, I guess you can do
that in photography as well. Thppt. If anyone can make sense of that bless
your heart.

Ahh!!! Philosophy 103!! Freshman year flashback!!
Naturally, we are all drawn to certan things; others are acquired. I am
naturally not attrracted to conceptual art or sculpture, but I have learned
to appreciate it and value it as a form of expression. Ahh, yes,
expression -- the great levelling buzzword of the arts -- expression.
My philosophical view stems partly from an epistemological one held by a
dead fella by the name of John Cage. He saw all as art, everything as
expression, all as music of some form. The familiar piece 4'33" -- in which
the performer is silent for that allotment of time -- is a testament to the
powerr of air conditioning units, cough drop wrappers, and sneezing of the
audience. Very zen approach...
Though I don't see expression as an arbitration, I don't see it like Don
Senor Cage did either. There are limits -- but by gum and by golly those
limits are far away. I use them now and again, and I use them a lot in my
own music, but in my perception, I always keep an ear out for the colors --
as well as I keep my eyes open for the expression with visible color, or
lack thereof. I stay as objective as I can and view any type of
expression -- within minimal bounds -- as art.
"It's not quite a mop, not quite a puppet, but man -- heh heh eh heh heh --
To answer your question truthfully, I don't know." H. Simpson...

When is it that the voice becomes an elixir?
It's during flirting, courtship, sex. Music's all that."

is a built-in psycho-social cultural imperative"
~Al Hansen
(Fluxus and Happenings artist, and grandfather to Beck)
In response to the statement "I see art as a magic act."
"Yeah it is. Like anything creative, where you are drawing
something extraordinary out of the ordinary, there is a magic there.
. . . I think it's fantastic, but everyone has a sense that they could
do it themselves. They can see a piece of themselves in it. That's
what attracts people to it. So it's more of a collaborative magic trick."
~ Beck
"A culture without art is prison. I think there's something interesting
in the corporate work ethic that implicitly believes, or says, that art
and music are somehow superfluous. It doesn't build nations and it
doesn't feed people, but it does something beyond that which is
nearly as essential. It won't keep your body alive like bread and water
would, but it will sustain you in another way more extensively than we
would ever think."
