Any of their early stuff when they were a more horn oriented group.
25 or 6 to 4, Make Me Smile , Colour my World , Does anybody Really know
What Time it is . Most anything off their first 6 or 7 seven LP's was
great stuff . I didn't like their later stuff , too pop oriented and
sugar coated .

"25 or 6 to 4" is an all-time favorite. "Old Days" is catchy and
listenable. Most of their other songs leave me cold.

Well, in general, I thought they *were* fairly lame, but they did sing
*some* good songs. For example, 25 or 6 to 4 (what does that MEAN???),
Call on Me, Wishing You Were Here, Make Me Smile...

You missed a discussion of Chicago a few weeks back where this song was
discussed at length. Here's my notes on "25 or 6 to 4", their #4 hit from
late summer of 1970:

"Featuring lead singer Peter Cetera, along with one of the most memorable
wa-wa guitar solos of the 1970s, performed by lead guitarist Terry Kath.
Keyboard player/songwriter Robert Lamm later explained this song was about
the process of songwriting itself, and the ³6 to 4² refers to the time of
the morning he finished the song. Recorded in August of 1969 in New York
and LA, and produced by James William Guercio. This was the second Chicago
song with numbers in the title; the first was "Questions 67 And 68" from
1969 (also re-charted in 1971). Chicago later remade this song in 1986 as
a minor Top 50 hit on the Full Moon label."

For the record, my own favorite Chicago hits include:

"Beginnings" (Columbia 45417)
"Dialogue (Parts 1 and 2)" (Columbia 45717)
"Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?" (Columbia 45264)
"Hard Habit to Break" (Full Moon 29214)
"Lowdown" (Columbia 45370)
"Old Days" (Columbia 10131)
"Questions 67 And 68" (Columbia 45467)
"Saturday in the Park" (Columbia 45657)
"Wishing You Were Here" (Columbia 10049)

and my apologies for one or two 1980s hits that snuck in there.

I really liked some of their lesser known songs like:

Dialogue (Part I and II)
Lowdown
I Just Want To Be Free
Happy Man

and some of their more popular songs:

Make Me Smile
Beginnings
Saturday In The Park
I've Been Searching So Long
Count On Me

Dialogue (Part I and II) is really interesting to listen to
25 years after its 1972 release. The lyric is probably
incomprehensible to anyone under 35 but it really captures a
moment in time.

In case you've forgotten, it goes something like this:

1) Are you optimistic about the way that things are going?

2) No I never ever think of it at all

1) Don't you ever worry when you see what's going on?

2) Well I try to mind my business that is no business at all

Curiously, Chicago just managed to get back the rights to all their
recordings to both Columbia and Warner Bros., and are now releasing them
themselves through a new label that I think is called "Chicago Records"
(or something similar).

Since their first album was a multiple-platinum-seller, I have no doubt
it's not that hard to find if you go to a big enough store. However, I
suspect it'd be easier to find on CD rather than cassette.

Actually, this song is on one of Chicago's greatest hits packages -- their

Nice to see how long this thread has gone on...My favorite part is the
end of the tune, how neatly the chords resolve to the final chord,
nice major 7th, interesting horn voicing (Pankow's trombone on that
major 7th at the BOTTOM of the chord! [not counting his overdubbed
solo] )...Just *feels* right.

I could go on forever about Chicago so I oughta cut it or I'll
ramble....

Well ... apparently a lot of people got enthusiastic about them.
Chicago did go on to sell more than a hundred million records around the
world.

I personally think a lot of the later stuff is underrated by this
group. Chicago kept trying different things along the way and is one of
the few bands (IMO) that can play multiple styles of music. Their
adaptability is what kept them alive in an industry that generally kills
most hit acts in a year or two.

Which is, in itself, an amazing thing to think about, since the
song was on Chicago V, and I and II were albums, along with the
quad-disc live Chicago IV. Five groundbreaking albums on ten LPs
in under four years. How many bands even make it to five albums
today?

There's little doubt they adapted... but they adapted straight into mushy
schlock. From an industry/financial point of view, Chicago's ability to
change with the times is admirable; but in my humble opinion, they may as
well have called it quits.

You know, people really ought to give some of the later Chicago
albums a good listen from beginning to end before making such statements.
Many *SINGLES* were ballads but many other tunes on the albums were not.
Peter Cetera also wrote songs that were harder and the other members of
Chicago did not stop writing.

Agreed. While I am a big fan of their first eight albums (yes I even like
the Live at Carnegie Hall album unlike several other people), I personally
feel that two of their best albums are 17 and 18.

Took my 8 year old to see them with my husband two summers ago. She
loved them just as much as I did! It was pretty funny too...she was

I'm pretty predictable when it comes to Chicago. If it's early, has
horns, and has Terry Kath doing the vocal, I like it. I don't care
for Cetera's whining vocals at all. Lamm on the vocal is ok, but the
band lost it's soul when Kath blew his brains out. My faves:

1) Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is (especially the full
version with the intro)
2) Make Me Smile
3) Beginnings
4) Saturday In The Park
5) Color My World
6) 25 or 6 to 4
