This week, the spotlight falls on the new songs of May 11, 1974:

Eddie Kendricks - "Son of Sagittarius"
Carly Simon - "Haven't Got Time For the Pain"
Steely Dan - "Rikki Don't Lose That Number"
Wednesday - "Teen Angel"
Diana Ross - "Sleepin'"
The New Birth - "Wild Flower"
Dr. John - "(Everybody Wanna Get Rich) Rights Away"
Maggie Bell - "After Midnight"
Golden Earring - "Radar Love"

There were nine debut singles on the Billboard Hot 100 this week. Four made the Top 40 and one reached into the Top 10. Among the bigger hits are Steely Dan's highest-charting song, a Golden Earring classic and two songs that were definitely reminiscent of their time. As for the others, one was a reimagined version of a 1960 "teen death" tragedy, two were remakes of hits from earlier in the 1970s, one was a playful Dr.John number and the other was a song that might have been overlooked because its singer was all over the place at the time.

Which doesn't appear on his "Ultimate Collection" CD.

Both good songs, but I grew tired of them during the five years I
worked in Lite Rock radio.

Never heard it, don't want to. (Can't stand Mark Dinning's original!)

Not quite an "Ultimate Collection" if it doesn't contain all his hits, is it? And that was a Top 40 single.
