My favorite by them was definitely "Big City Miss Ruth Ann" - loved
the way they stuffed all those words into a title.
Mr. M
I will tell him! Did receive a e-mail reply, but indirect!
Thanks.

There is that chance that Sony has those tapes in their archives
somewhere unless they felt the need to toss a bunch of masters like
RCA records did years ago...
If Sony (or even BMG) has them, they'd sure license them to whoever, but
that is not the case. Don't believe any of the majors toss masters.
Thanks!

RCA did indeed toss/destroy some masters in the 1970's I believe it
was when they had an old warehouse they used knocked down... they gave
people the opportunity to get tapes, etc but whatever was left was
destroyed with the warehouse. RCA has since regretted that decision.
As for Sony, BMG... they company is one in the same now so everything
that was owned by Arista, Buddah, RCA, etc belongs to the Sony/BMG
music group.
With regards to tossing things, once upon a time there was a fourth TV
network called DUMONT. The majority of that networks programming was
saved on KINESCOPE(a film made from a camera placed in front of a TV
monitor)BUT in the 1970's someone felt the need to dump all the
remaining programming into the upper new york bay when they felt the
material was worthless. Some of the programming was destroyed before
then so they could recover the silver content from the film in the
late 1950's after the network ceased broadcasting.

On Gemm, you can list all the Sussex releases on 45s available for
sale. A lot of them never hit the top 100 and are really pricey - one
lists for $235.00 Even some of the bigger hits are going up in
price. Dennis Coffey and the band had a big hit with Scorpio, and
they had a similar song with "Taurus" which reached about #20, but
I've never seen a copy of it, and who ever heard it on the radio.
Interestingly, they had a song that only reached about #90 called
"Ride Sally Ride/ Get It On - I've seen more copies of that than
"Taurus", If the masters for these songs are gone, then I guess some
of these pricey 45s are going to serve as the masters. At least there
is no doubt as to the originality.
Mr. M
I will have to pull my CD that has Scorpio on it and see who Rhino
licensed that song from. The CD was called Kurtis Blow presents the
History of Rap Volume 1 and the only reason I bought the CD was
because it had the 45 version of Rhythm Heritage Theme From S.W.A.T.
on it. Other tracks included Booker T & The MG's Melting Pot.
They made TVs, too. Mom used to work there!

Thanks, Paul!

You license rights to publish, not license to gain material. That's why,
still, actual masters/remasters trickle in, on much smaller labels,
after the gurus of music published the bland sound. Even on Rhino's
site, they swear some songs were only recorded on a monophonic tape
track, because that's all they were able to obtain/find, but others,
later, proved them wrong.

WHile that is true, IT MIGHT give some insight as to the company that
holds the masters.
Ah, okay, I see!!
Get to work and find me the Sussex Records session tapes! :-)
Uni
Look up that Do The Hustle dude, he was instrumental in The Presidents
charted hit!! Fork over the session tapes, Mr. Van McCoy!!! :-)
Uni
Van McCoy has been dead for 30 years.
