This probably came up already, but I'm rehashing. I'm currently working on
a 1964 Canadian chart book of a particular Canadian station, and so I use
the actual Canadian record label numbers. While researching, I often
compare the different releases between Canada and the US. And occasionally
there were big differences...
When it came to The Animals "The House Of The Rising Sun", buyers in the US
got shortchanged! Pun intended.
The Canadian single release was on Capitol Records of Canada and was the
full, original UK length of 4:28, while buyers in the US got the 2:58
butchering from MGM Records.
On the Animals debut North American album, the tracks were identical but
the covers differed between Canada and the US. However, once again, MGM
used the 2:58 edit instead of the full 4:28 offering on the Canadian
Capitol Records album (which I have before me as I speak). I would have
been freakin' irritated if I knew I had been cheated EVEN on the album,
of all things!
