This probably came up already, but I'm rehashing. I'm currently working on
a 1964 Canadian chart book of a particular Canadian station, and so I use
the actual Canadian record label numbers. While researching, I often
compare the different releases between Canada and the US. And occasionally
there were big differences...

When it came to The Animals "The House Of The Rising Sun", buyers in the US
got shortchanged! Pun intended.

The Canadian single release was on Capitol Records of Canada and was the
full, original UK length of 4:28, while buyers in the US got the 2:58
butchering from MGM Records.

On the Animals debut North American album, the tracks were identical but
the covers differed between Canada and the US. However, once again, MGM
used the 2:58 edit instead of the full 4:28 offering on the Canadian
Capitol Records album (which I have before me as I speak). I would have
been freakin' irritated if I knew I had been cheated EVEN on the album,
of all things!

Some years back, I found the Animals LP at a tag sale and was both
surprised and appalled at the edit of "House of the Rising Sun." I had
never heard it before as oldies radio always played the full version
(thankfully).

The House of the Rising Sun is a traditional folk song with an
uncertain origin. The Animals had the most popular recording of it in
1964. Others have recorded it including Pete Seeger in 1958, Joan Baez
in 1960, Bob Dylan in 1962, and Conway Twitty in 1970.

The oldest known recording of The House of the Rising Sun appears to
be the one by Clarence "Tom" Ashley & Gwen Foster from 1933. Listen to
it here:

Quite amazing. The song sure is a classic.

But can you imagine The Animals getting on stage, and the vocal that's
on the 1933 version comes out of Eric Burdon's lips....

I can't possibly imagine the audience reaction!

I know how you can find out what it would have been like.

Go to a club one night and convince them to plug your MP3 player into
the system and then have them play some of your favorite 1960s songs
for the crowd.
