The way to work Columbia House is to look at overall cost per CD. I was
paying ten dollars per CD here in Canada, which never seemed too high, given
that they were albums selling for twenty dollars or so at the stores. If
you look at merely the S&H, then of course it's high. BUt if you look
at the deals (often 3 for the price of 1) and add in the S&H and divide
by the number of CDs, it usually works out fine.
That doesn't even factor in the "freebies" you get when you join, which
alone come in at a far lower price per CD. I tend to count those
separately, and I've never joined the club where I didn't get all
those "freebies" for the price of one CD at the store, the rest being
actually free. One could drop the cost per CD significantly if one
adds up all they pay for the CDs during the course of a membership, and
divide by the number of CDs received.
Of course, the trick is to not buy until the deals are good.
ANother trick, if COlumbia House is still requiring more than 1 CD
at full price to fullfill the membership requirements is to buy a 2CD
album, since they count as 2 towards fulfillment, yet don't cost twice
as much as a single CD, and S&H is only a dollar more than a single CD.
But those 2CDs when there is a good deal, and you do great.
Most of the CDs I've bought have come from COlumbia House (BMG closed
here in Canada a year after I joined, though I did well from them that
first year), and because the prices were so low I was buying things I
wouldn't consider at store prices, hence my CD collection is far more
varied than my record collection ever was.

I got the sh**s of Time Life about 15 years ago--sending me stuff I
hadn't ordered. I finally wrote them AND called them to say "If you
EVER send me anything again, I'm keeping it and you can chase me to hell
to collect." They haven't bothered me since.

It's no big scam anyway. You get 10 cd's of 15 songs each in a
collector's box for $150. That's a very normal price of $10 per CD.
Don't compare this with your overstock bin stuff, which are all just
clearance items "for the homeless" :-)

Yeah, with my Columbia plan, maybe late '80's, I had to purchase 3-4 LPs
within a year and then they're half price or 2 for one. However, that's
when, at least for me, the S&H offset and "value"! Heck, they were being
shipped in the same state I reside!!!

Think it was (8) CDs, with (2) Doo-wop ones.
150 songs should not cost more than $75 bucks! If, and a BIG IF, they
were being released by T-L, for the first time, digitally remastered, I
might understand the higher price!
Heck, I paid $25 for 140 songs, from Collectables and that even had a
nice black wooden box! Not some toilet paper box, with a picture on it! :-)

$10 for a CD of 15 songs IS a good price, even for a "bag lady" like
you. These aren't the typical "samplers" you normally spam here at 10
songs per disc. Mind you, I checked the track lists and "yuck", their
mostly the kinda stuff you like. . .

Excuse me? If you look at my last "buy", there was a Time-Life CD, with
20 songs, for less than $10. Maybe they couldn't "fit" 20 songs on those
CDs. Maybe long versions? Nope! Heck, T-L use to put 22 songs on a CD
and refer to it as a "Double Length" CD! I guess with advances in
technology, they had to minimize the number of tracks, so they could
charge more!!

Why buy a full dust bin CD of Sedaka singing vapid songs like "Oh Carol"
and other ditties in "Latin" when I can buy the exact song I want via a
download $1.00. Neil didn't record songs meant for audiophiles, so an
mp3 is more than perfect for a pop song.

Actual remastering seems a more recent thing where the sound
is distinctly improved for CDs. It's obvious when you hear it.

I totally agree. Like I've stated before, record companies use these
terms loosely, even to the point of fraudulent statements. Digitally
mastered, would be correct, in Time-Life's case.

don't even exist, remastering is impossible.

Most remastering can be heard with different mixing. Some sounds close
to the originally released songs, some songs sound totally different.
