Arguably (of course), the greatest lead vocalist/drummer was Levon Helm.

Lewis was a drummer, but if memory serves, neither he nor The Playboys
played on many of their recordings & most certainly not on "This Diamond
Ring". I believe Hal Blaine played drums on that recording as well as
many of the other Gary Lewis hits. Leon Russell also played on that
session.

According to the liner notes for the "Legendary Master Series" CD, Lewis
says:

"The original Playboys that I put together in 1964 were the guys that
did all the tracks to the first seven hits. We played on all the basic
tracks but then the overdubbing was done by studio people. Actually,
they let The Playboys feel like they were really a part of it, but in
the final mixdown, they kind of buried them."

"I played drums on everything - all the albums & all the singles up
until 'She's Just My Style', which was the fifth hit. That was kind of
a quick shuffle & I really didn't have drum chops for a shuffle. That's
when we brought in Jim Keltner, who became part of The Playboys & I went
up front. Hal Blaine was also there from the beginning. He played
timpani on 'This Diamond Ring'. Leon Russell played piano, celeste,
harpsichord, organ, & was the arranger on just about everything."

Interesting. Thanks. I didn't realize Leon Russell was so involved
with the Playboys.

Yeah, this was a few years before Leon hooked up with Joe Cocker & went
on to become a star in his own right. At the time, he was doing a lot
of west coast studio work & performing as one of the Shindogs on the
"Shindig" tv show.

Probably. I knew he did a lot of session work before he struck out on
his own. I wish he were more active, though I realize the
neurosurgery may have slowed him down. I thought the album he did a
few years ago with Elton John was great.

I meant drummers that do both at the same time like Karen and,
possibly, Gary Walker although I was mystifield how he achieved drum
rolls with brushes, lol!

Do you think Dolenz was a good actor, as a child or an adult? He was so
good in Circus Boy that after its short run he seldom found any acting
work until he got the gig with The Monkees. The real actor in Circus
Boy was Noah Beery, Jr.

And, how do you rate him as a drummer? Can you really tell which
Monkees' songs he's really drumming on? You can be assured he didn't
drum on "I'm a Believer", their UK #1.

I recently saw the 2005 movie, The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada.
Good movie & Helm was excellent in that one; Tommy Lee Jones is the
star. Also recently saw Shooter (retitled Double Target for Korean tv)
with Mark Wahlberg in the lead.

Not unless she was 2 years old when she gave birth. Levon spent a lot
of time in Canada as a member of Ronnie Hawkins' Hawks but that's
probably the only connection with that particular Ms. Helm (as he was
born in Arkansas, USA).
