Chilton lived in NO for several years & was a Willie Tee fan. Notice on
the remake, he makes no attempt to work around the Willie Tee name drop.

I can't recall him doing it but, if he did, it was probably "The Killer"
who was going to buy or give all those things. Lewis recorded a bunch
of Chuck Berry songs but I can't think of any Diddley songs off the top
of my head.

I would think that with all the non hit crap that you like that you'd
be the last person to try and knock a record for being a B side. If
you had the publishing and writer's royalties from what you refer to
as "B-side filler" you'd be set for life. And you're not even correct
about it being a B side.

As I'm sure you're well aware. "Tijuana Taxi" was a top 40 chart hit,
AND was the A side of the record, as the flip side did not become a
hit until 3 months after "Taxi" charted. As I'm sure you are also well
aware, before it was a single "Tijuana Taxi" was the opening track on
an album (Going Places) that was number one for SIX WEEKS and was on
the charts for over three years.

The record appears to have broken at WLOF in Orlando, Florida, where it
debuted on January 21, 1966, and then reached #1 on February 11th ---
ALMOST 2 1/2 months before it debuted nationally on Billboard, on April
23rd. In fact, in their home town of Los Angeles, it didn't debut there
until mid-May 1966. So much for hometown advantage . . .

In all fairness, being from L.A. isn't exactly like being from some town in the Corn Belt that almost never produces famous recording artists.

And given the lyrics, I have to wonder when "Dirty Water" debuted on Boston radio.

What I'm saying is that if a local act had already had hits there, a
new release would be much more likely to be noticed right away, like
when there was a new Four Seasons or a New Rascals record around here.
After a couple of hits the radio stations and the fans are then well
aware that the act is from the area. When a relaese (Dirty Water) is
the first hit for the act, nobody really knows anything about them
yet, even if there were members that had done other things prior to
that.

I don't see anything about them being studio guys, but they did have
lots of releases before this one....

In 1964, Liberty Records released three singles and an album, The
Standells In Person At P.J.'s. The album was later re-issued as The
Standells Live and Out of Sight. The band also appeared on The
Munsters TV show, performing "I Want to Hold Your Hand" In late 1964,
they signed with Vee Jay and released two singles in 1965. Later in
the year they signed with MGM for one single.

Also, "Dirty Water" was #1 on the Record World charts. Apparently it
was a huge seller and was huge in the jukeboxes, but was not so big on
enough radio stations to chart higher than it did in BB & CB (11 & 8).
I can see the record being too raw sounding for a lot of stations at
that time.

I wouldn't call that a "version" of the song. It's more like them
fucking around in the studio in between recordings. I'm not surprised
that they knew the song, it was a HUGE hit in the UK when they were
all like 8-9 years old.
