Radio edits can be mentioned. Both vocal and instrumental outros
count.
Some have similiar radio edits
"Are you Ready?"/PG&E, 1970 [radio edited cut out and replace with
repetition the very long vocal ending with the chorus]
"Beginnings"/CHICAGO, 1971 [same sitution the 1969 original has a
quite long instrumental ending replaced by recreated repetition on
the later 45, heavily reviled version.]
AND
"Jet"/wings, 1974 [likewise, ramlbing vocal cold ending's replaced
same as above.]
Others:
"Do it Again"/STEELY DAN, 1973 [opening is chopped but not "shortened"
at open]
"Get Ready"/RARE EARTH, 1970 [both 2 minutes 19-20 seconds of the 2:40
length intro and the about 16-1/2 minutes of the ending are completely
chopped off]
"Green Eyed Lady"/SUGARLOAF, 1970 [part of the intro is chopped off
and truncated, and there is an early fade]
"Hey Jude"[promo only]/BEATLES, 1968 [long fade edited on some radio
promo singles]
"Hotel California"/EAGLES, 1977 [single is pointlessly shortened--
still very long and only half a minut edited-promos cut off the intro
a bit"]
"Layla"/DEREK & DOMINOES [original 1971 minor hit release only. No 4
minute ending here as on the original 1970 LP, reissue CDs and reissue
1972 45 version, all of which have this element]
"Papa Was a Rolling Stone"/TEMPTATIONS, 1972 [the original Part 1's
extremely large intro is shortened o single, still 2 minues or so on
single, and outro is faded]
"Slippin' Into Darkness"/WAR, 1972 [4 minute intro, edited---btw
that's the only edit]
"Spinnin' Wheel"/BLOOD, SWEAT & TEARS, 1969 [cut off by about two
minutes on single version-the album had the guys cracking up at the
end of the session.]
"You Keep Me Hanging' On"/VANILLA FUDGE, 1968 [both 2-1/2 minute
introduction section and 2 or so minut eoutro with mocking organ
edited out]
"You've Made Me So Very Happy"/BLOOD, SWEAT AND TEARS, 1969 [again, a
early fade]
There are many other examples including yet another list that can
include Disco & Soul 1970s records like the Harold Melvin, Frankie
Valli, Tavares, Trampps, etc.,etc. 12 inch versions. :-)
IIRC, Isaac Hayes' "Theme from Shaft" was edited at beginning for the
45 version.
Ray Arthur
Mavis Staples' classic version of "A House Is Not A Home" from 1969:
http://www.imeem.com/artists/mavis_staples/music/Fb4cPuKs/mavis-staples-a-house-is-not-a-home/
Listen to the length of that outro!
-Larry Ingersoll
Bee Gees Nights On Broadway is missing the slowed down part that
starts out with 'I Will wait' on the radio promos
Rhythm Heritage Theme From S.W.A.T=======now here's a record that has
3 different versions. The original 45 is extended(4:07), the LP version
(3:20) is shorter than the 45 and there is at least one other version
that runs at 2:50......I cannot remember what versions are on the
promo copy.
Rhythm Heritage Baretta's Theme(Keep Your Eye On The Sparrow) original
single release has a shortened intro, mid section, ending... promo
45's contain the full length LP version as well as the edit
Gerry Rafferty Baker Street promo 45's have the original single
version in addition to a version with a shortened intro. I THINK
there may be a 45 release that as the full length LP version on it as
well.
The Miracles- Love Machine, originally issued as parts 1 & 2, the
American Pie reissue 45 contains the full length LP version on one
side
Don McClean American Pie-- originally issued as parts 1 & 2, there is
a reissue out there with the full length version on one side while
earlier reissues were identical the to original United Artists single
release
With regards to Blood, Sweat & Tears You've Made Me So Very Happy, the
original 45 is also missing what would be called an instrumental
breakdown(sort of an organ solo) after he sings 'Thank you baby, thank
you baby'
Pink Floyd Time, the 45 has an edited intro and at the end repeats
part of the beginning again similar to what was done with the edit of
Chicago's Beginnings. The flip side which was Us And Them is also
shortened and missing numerous parts. It also fades on one of the
instrumental breaks.
Tavares It Only Takes A Minute------45 is missing the ' fry yourself
an egg' section while a special DJ promo(4:45) contains that verse and
also repeats a section. The original promo 45 was identical to the
single version. Here is a link to one that is currently on ebay...
thank goodness I did not pay that for my copy!!!! The seller says he's
never seen it on ebay. For the record, this is the 4th time this promo
has come up that I know of including the copy I bought several months
ago
I could go on and on with this listing but will stop
here.........................

BTW Forgot to mention: Chicago @Carnegie Hall--for introducitons--the
winner's the intro foir "Does Anybody Really Know what time it Is?"--

half minutes.!!
GOod one! Frgot about that one.

If memory serves, the intro to Piece of My Heart by Big Brother and the
Holding Company was considerably shortened for its 45 r.p.m. version.
As for outros, Cherish by the Association eliminated the repetition of
the line "And I do . . . cherish you" on the 45 r.p.m. release (an
improvement, in my humble opinion).

Good one!! which brings to mind No Sugar Tonight, although you DO NOT
hear it on the radio, the single version which was the flip side to
American Woman omits the entire "New Mother Nature" song.
clarifying this post, you DO NOT hear the single edit of NST on the
radio. They always play the LP version with NMN included
That's not all. It was a very complex edit. Only available on promo
45s. Commercial 45s had the full length.
> "Beginnings"/CHICAGO, 1971 [same sitution the 1969 original has a

Likewise, a very complex edit.
This version was available on the original 1969 45 and the 1971 re-
release.
> AND
> "Jet"/wings, 1974 [likewise, ramlbing vocal cold ending's replaced

Only available on promo 45s.

The intro IS shortened with a couple other edit points later in the
song plus an early fade.
>
> "Green Eyed Lady"/SUGARLOAF, 1970 [part of the intro is chopped off
> and truncated, and there is an early fade]
The 3:40 version(labeled 3:33) had a number of edit points before the
early fade. When the single was first released it was a 5:58, early
fade version. There was also a 2:58 promo 45 version.
>
> "Hey Jude"[promo only]/BEATLES, 1968 [long fade edited on some radio

>
That's news to me. I remember stations simply fading it as they saw
fit. The only official shortened version was on one of the greatest
hits LPs.
>
> "Papa Was a Rolling Stone"/TEMPTATIONS, 1972 [the original Part 1's
> extremely large intro is shortened o single, still 2 minues or so on

The LP version is 11:45!
>
> "Slippin' Into Darkness"/WAR, 1972 [4 minute intro, edited---btw
> that's the only edit]
There are a number of edit points on the single version. Then there's
the promo 45 that's further edited on the intro.
>
> "Spinnin' Wheel"/BLOOD, SWEAT & TEARS, 1969 [cut off by about two
> minutes on single version-the album had the guys cracking up at the

The single was also a different mix.
>
> "You've Made Me So Very Happy"/BLOOD, SWEAT AND TEARS, 1969 [again, a
> early fade]
And a single edit point.
Any of these versions can be played on my show, heard on the internet.

"Old Fashioned Love Song" and "Joy To The World" by Three Dog Night.
Correct.

I agree.
You could go on for years with LP/45 differences. Why I don't bother,
except, when the 45 contained material not on the LP!!.
Uni
Uni
Hi Bob! Saw you're back (on the air) in another music forum; I didn't join.
Uni
Here are some, shorter than LP [yes there are some where the LP's
shorter, but this will satisfy your palette for singles-only[!!!!}
material]:
"Joy to the world"/THREE DOG NIGHT, 1971 ["Joy to the world/Joy to you
and me" part]
"Liar"/TDN,1971 [instrumental break has a flute solo on 45 not on LP,
maybe just remixed or added to the single, not to mention the ending
is entirely different between the LP and 45].
"I Know [I'm Losin' You]"/RARE EARTH, 1970 [I've heard more existed
only on single, but for me only the echo lyrics at the beginning are
the only 45-only material, the LP having much less echo, though it's
used to effect for the other vocal elemnts of both. I hear much more
missing on single than LP]
Not included are TDN's 1971/1972 "Old fashioned Love song" and Billy
Joel's 1978? "Sometimes a Fastnasty" as those are on single longer
than LP.
BUT "Uni" has the right idea. How about THIS? Shorter singles but
stopping cold, and longer LPs that fade--
The Moody Blues's 1968 "Tuesday Afternoon"--cold stop on 2:16 single,
the 8 and a half minute long album version [coupled with "Evening Time
to get away"] fades. You coluld also say this for THE classic from
this, at the end, "Nights in white Satin/Breathe Deep", same thing,
except some singles reissued faded [NOT the official 4:26 verison
which ends cold], and besides using a Chinese gong on the LP, an
instrument that NATURYALL fades, but there is an apparent intentional
fade.;]
No, like "Tossin' And Turnin'" and "My Boyfriend's Back"....
http://www.angelfire.com/empire/abpsp/images/tossin.mp3
http://www.angelfire.com/empire/abpsp/images/boyfriend.mp3
Where the 45 single was actually longer than the LP version!
I like your topic!!!!
Uni
How about the (amended?) intro on the song "Are You Ready" - Pacific Gas
& Electric.
Uni
Uni, I'm aware that there was a verse at least MORE in the restored
"Face the Music" [the LP that "Evil Woman" also originally came from
back in 1975.]
Getting back to long intro's, "Shaft" & "Papa Was a Rolling Stone" had
longer introductions on singles than expected as it was, not to
mention that, especially on the latter mentioned*, on the LP even
LONGER!
*"Papa..Rolling Stone":1:12 or so on single, 3:23? or so on the LP.
