There has been a prevailing opinion stated several times in here
down through the years that Deep Purple's version of "Hush" is
superior to the one of the man who wrote it.
Those who subscribe to this notion are sort of full of shit, baby!!!
Joe South's version is so much better on so many levels from that
scintillating signature guitar, the energetic gospel-like shout and
response, and on to an absolutely dramatic base interlude!!
That raw ,echoing, beautiful Muscle Shoals studio sound is the
perfect aural conduit and I defy anybody to detract from South's
voice!!
The Fioras of the world need to stop staring into the afrophiliacal
prism and humbly admit that Joe South has more square miles of Soul
that South Korea, baby!!!

I just refluxed.
I never liked this Barney Fife of Rock and Roll.

He probably couldn't even get it up in Cherry Hill Park.

And why would that be illegal or an impossible task for any talented
musician, or in this case, musicians?
Vocally they're about the same, done in the same style. But musically
(instrumentally) Deep Purple blows South out of the water. South wrote the
original, then B.J. Royal basically copied it and promptly went nowhere
with it as a single. A year later, Deep Purple reworks the song's weakest
points, why everyone previously failed with it - the soundtrack. The
incredible keyboard work (also great guitar) on Deep Purple's version pulls
this song out of mediocrity and into a massive radio hit. Case closed.

Case closed.
No
Case emptied!!!
As in that case of malt liquor you had to quaff down that wattled
gullet to come up with your addled poppycock!!
Deep Purple got more radio play and so you and those other
aesthetically deficient automatons dumbly accept their "Hush" as being
superior!!!
Why don't you change YOUR NAME to YOU'RE NUMB because you are
obviously culturally and musically insensate, baby!!!
Keep drinking the deep purple cool aid, GIlbert!!!

First & formost: if you believe that Joe South's version is the
definitive one, so be it. There are many who believe that. I'm not
one of them & neither, in my view, is the vast majority of music
consumers.
The Deep Purple version, IMO, is vocally superior & instrumentally
superior-chart position does not influence my opinion one iota. As
I've often stated, I preder the 1st version of Deep Purple to the
"Smoke On The Water" version (& all others, although I DO like Joe
Lynn Turner as a vocalist)

Err.... I never said a word against Joe South's original of "Hush." In
fact, I'm a big fan of his music!
What are you trying to do, Dennis? Surpass Uni in spurious assumptions
based on circumstantial evidence and personal bias?
Oh, and Dennis, be nice to Rocky, he's okay. He gave me an MP3 of Johnny
Johnson & The Bandwagon! Luckily, I bought the CD when it was officially
released, unlike that CT company Dean likes and slobbers over, what's
the name, Disc One, that bootlegs LPs on CD!!!
Personalize that, Mr. F!
Uni
Well.......I guess I am, Deano!!
Sorry about that.....old habits!!
You had South entries on your '68 best of list.
So I fucked up...............Le's move on, baby!

An easy way to surpass Dean's knowledge, is to buy CDs! :-)
Okay, and Roger Ford and Marc Dashevsky, too!

I've always had nothing but admiration for the Rock!!!
He knows his smoke and he had to run a very emotional and
persecuting gauntlet in here against the Evil Axis on more than one
occasion!!!
Rocky is a good 'un!!!

Yep, even posted trivia, unlike these favorite song lists that bored the
group to death until I came along and salvaged the mess from extinction!!!
And you are a gentleman. Mr. Dennis!

Thank you old boy but I'm going to have to gentlemanly disagree with
your detraction of the favorite lists posts!!
I frankly find them invaluable in coloring in the gaps that I missed
while growing up!! I'm firmly aware what I favored musically in my
formative years and DO indeed get a thrill when I see affirmation
among these learned compilers but it is the accepted classics from R&B
and even the Scarlotti hidden pop gems that find me wearing out the
Youtube these days, baby!!!
You never see be throwing brick bracks at Blumenthal's "Philly
Remenescences" either!! Great stuff!!!
I'm a shameless succubus to these brimming halls of musical bounty,
baby!!!
Keep it coming!!!
